For some time Jacob Tyler has been concerned about productivity in the Production section, managed by Angus McIntyre. There are often problems with delay in fulfilling orders. What annoys Jacob most of all is the fact that the Technical Section are almost always waiting on production to finish their part of an order. Peter Poplar has run out of patience and spends a lot of time telling Jacob that the delays are not the fault of his section. Last year the Company employed a Consultant to work out whether more staff were needed in the production section. His report demonstrated that staffing levels were satisfactory. However he believed that the staff themselves were working inefficiently and did not seem to care about working faster to make sure orders were out on time. Staff have indicated that they do not like section 13 of the Employment Agreement relating to performance appraisals. No reasons have been given for this. Jacob Tyler has asked you to undertake study of the production section. He is keen to introduce systems that will lead to increased performance but is not sure what they should be. Please undertake the study and write a formal report to Jacob Tyler covering the following areas:- (1) An explanation of modern performance management procedures including:- a) The importance of performance management. (2 marks) b) A range of two models and approaches to staff appraisal systems, with discussion on advantages and disadvantages of each. (4 marks) c) The manner in which appraisal systems may be linked to corporate objectives (2 mark) (2) A recommendation as to what system you would consider suitable for Agtech including the reasons for your choice.
