With the increase in population the rate of crime also increases. Act against law that is associated with violence inducing harm in the society is known as crime. But at certain times crime is not violent to induce physical harm. Such a kind of crime is white collar crime that is mostly associated with corporate world. The Government of UK has tried many ways to prevent such crimes but at most of the times it is found that the taken measures fail. Most of the convicts are financially so strong that they get out one or the other way and prove themselves innocent. If crime induces harm physically to a person, action can be taken, but if crime is at the top most level like corruption that involves no specific individual then it is very hard for the government to take strict action. Here in the essay the crime and its effects, relationship between media and crime, white collar crime and its types and crimes related to all individuals that whether they get proper justice from agents and agencies or not are studied.
The nature and extent of crime and criminality
Over the years a number of memes has been circulating about United Kingdom that the crime rate is more than 5 times higher than The United States. A recent survey has indicated that violent crime of Britain is 4 times higher than United States but still there is no reason for being skeptic. It has been found that Britain had 59 homicides in relation to gun in the year 2011.
While evaluating the extent of crime, it has been observed that in UK, there are about 2034 crimes that are violent enough in every 100000 people. This also gives the report of crime rate of 466 violent crimes per 100000 residents. British police has recorded that there are about 871,712, responsible for crime against persons. There are about 54509 sexual offenses and violent robberies of about 75101. This shows the rate of crime which is much above the average limit in UK.
The below table shows the crime rate in England and Wales

In comparison to other harmful activities, criminal activities are the most effective as act of crime means the one who is held responsible acts beyond law (Peterson, 2013). Thus this means that crime is the act which is beyond the permissible limit of harm. The individuals who are responsible for the act of crime have to provide penalty. The issues that are in relation to governmental crime are denoted as crime. The rest unethical activities those may not be treated as governmental issues are considered harmful activities.
Relationship between Media and crime
From the past people are constantly getting deviated by fascination of crime and its deviance which are actually caused by them. The act of media shows the insatiable interest in regards to crime that is associated with the societies (Pruyt & Kwakkel, 2014). It has become our daily news report that consists of crime on all aspects in regards to movies, games, sports etc. these factors has led to raise questions about the media about its act on society. This has also raised the question of relationship between media and crime about who enhances the actual news. Sometimes it is found that for making the news quite attractive, media represents the matter into a more diversified way where it actual news is quite different (Moore & Recker, 2013). Here raises the question on the act of media. What is the media actually doing? For increasing their TRP, the media is proving vague news to the audiences. Moreover media is that particular aspect of society which is the most effective means to share information among citizens. Media the most effective and fastest means of sharing news that might or might not be vague is predominant in everyone’s feelings (Bierie, 2015). Crime is one of the most eminent adverse generations of feelings among the individual. Media acts the catalyst to enrich such feelings among individuals and rage their feelings. Thus media acts as the creation of psychological and sociological feelings among all citizens.
Legal and Illegal Intoxicants
The government should allow the use of drug to be legal. Rather it has to assume that all the drug users are socially dangerous. Instead it should be kept in hold about the users who are actually more accountable to their actions by giving the accused extended sentences and also for the people who commit suicide under such influence (Borrion, 2013). It is also true that certain drugs make people more aggressive those results in incensement of crime. The strategy of extending sentences to crime will solve the crime related problems by actually deterring the people who get responsively associated to intoxication and by keeping the people who don’t even care about the sentences longer off the street.
Despite of the several varieties of substances that is intoxicating most of them fall into depressants, stimulants and hallucinations. Such factors lead to the several accidents and road related crimes. The individual gets addicted to drugs that give the instinct of aggressiveness in their activities which ultimately hampers the society by their illegal activities.
The governments must also make certain steps to indicate the availability of drugs that are restricted to a certain limit. Individual s must not get access to all intoxications. They need to have the proper authority to consume certain drugs. The retail shops must firmly deal with this to comply with the criminal activities that mostly originate from excessive drugs consumption.
In UK a large percentage of crime originates from consumption of excessive drugs. There are several methods that the adductors have adopted to get access to drugs at any means. Crime has mostly originated due to the sense of aggressiveness among the individuals (Walters, 2013). Thus there are many factors that connect drug related illegality with the induction to crime.
Criminalization vs. Medicalisation
With the increase in act of criminalization the effective measures to control the criminal activities are to be changed (Barlow, 2013). The process of rectification what is in dealt is that most of the accused are punished for their criminal offence. But nowadays the process of medicalization has come to forefront where the addicted are made to get medicalized by using many methods (López, 2012). But there are many flawed assumptions-
- The addicts do not want to get medication
- The treatment process is only effective to the ‘action’ or ‘preparation’ stage of the change
- The treatment don’t work and it fails when it is lousy
- For the consuming countries and for productive countries legalization factor should be panacea.
- For finding the effectiveness crime should be the measuring stick.
White Collar Crime
White collar crime is a type of crime that is committed by certain individuals that mostly relates to financial gain (Arnulf & Gottschalk, 2012). A typical white collar crime generally consists of individuals who are related to corporate world. They are generally being the higher authority responsible persons. The white collar criminals can be business manager, office executives, fund manager, account head executives or other executives. The white collar criminals are generally held accused by the whistle blowers in the organization, who may be forensic accountants or auditors (Miller, 2012). The entities who are in charge of the investigation of white collar crime are FBI, Exchange Commission and Securities. The National Association of securities also deals with the investigation of white collar crimes (Gottschalk & Glasø, 2013). Some examples of white collar convicted criminals are Kenneth Lay, Bernard Madoff and Bernard Ebbers. Certain examples of white collar crimes are securities fraud that includes investment information misinterpretation, embezzlement that deals with fraud misuse. This also includes corporate fraud like dishonesty and the illegal actions that a company takes against an employee and money laundering that deals with funds which are criminally obtained. White collar crime is punishable. Criminals have to pay for it. Fine and imprisonment are the measures taken against it.
