For those who need it, here is a little recipe for summarising research studies:
1. Identify the main question or hypothesis.
2. Describe how it was investigated focusing only on the most relevant features for the
issue of interest (for example, if the study is on genderlects, mentioning whether
speakers samples were recorded digitally or analogically is unnecessary).
3. Report the results as concisely as possible.
4. Report the conclusion of the authors with respect to the main question (i.e., reporting
that the authors think the issue should be investigated further is not really necessary
in a short summary).
5. If appropriate, include your own views: comment on the relevance of the question, on
the appropriateness of the method, and/or the correctness of the interpretation.
A note of caution: if you’re summarizing an article, you don’t need to keep citing it throughout
