Assessment 2 - Theory Essay Assessment Type Written Assignment Description Use one of themes or movements from the ARBE3200 lectures to analyse ONE architectural focus project or case study (a built or hypothetical building or space). Choose a project with characteristics that appear to relate to or resonate with the key issues or attributes of ONE of the movements or themes. The project can be a building or space in a film or artwork that has been written about in a critical and scholarly manner. Your emphasis should be on the application of architectural theory and the way that theoretical ideas intersect with the practice or production of architecture. The review should first identify the key issues or attributes of the chosen movement/theme, which are then used to frame the discussion of the and its important, relevant characteristics of the selected project. The essay should refer to: the relevance of the work to the theory of architecture, and its context (philosophical, social and / or political as is relevant) and the critical discourse on and about the theme / project. The discourse associated with the case study might confirm, extend and/or challenge particular aspects of the theme. Refer to both negative and positive criticisms about the limitations of the theme / project written by recognized authors. Use in-text citations for both for both quotes and major points following a recognized model (such as the Chicago Manual of Style). Include a reference list at the end of the essay. Students can continue to use one of the movements or theme covered in assignment 1.
