Assignment 1 - Individual and Small Group Assessment
Word Length: 3000-3500 words
Drawing on material from topics one through six and relevant chapters from Robbins et. al., (2014) AND your readings, provide a critical evaluation of your own behavioural traits and behaviours in the group you select in your organisational context.
Develop a deeper understanding of your own behavioural style
Develop a deeper understanding of a group you are close to within the immediate organisational context you inhabit
Commence a process of thinking about how this understanding might lead to a more informed and effective professional relationship environment
Commence the process of engaging at a deeper level with the second assessment task
Robbins et.al., (2014) AND your readings should be ample for this task. I would expect a minimum of 5 to 6 references listed in your reference list and you should cite these resources regularly throughout the assignment as it is your DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE of unit material that I am assessing (see associated marking criteria and FAQs).
Tables, graphs, the reference list and appendices are NOT included in the word count and should be placed at the end of the essay and referred to in the main body, including page number/s, when used.
Your primary goal in this assessment task is to conduct an in-depth analysis of the dynamics and functioning of a small group and the individuals inside this group. Choose a particular group, with which you have been acquainted, or of which you have been an active member, within your organisation.
Your analysis can include the use of assessment instruments in MyOBLab or your textbook (but be careful and ethical in using these to evaluate people – please see final section of the assignment marking template, below, to be clear about using these) but you MUST contain the following sections (suggested word limits in brackets below). Each section should be given a heading (for example: 1. Background to Organisation X); however, if you choose to use subheadings within each section you should avoid (when practical) labelling each and every paragraph as this tends to disrupt the overall flow and analysis.
Very brief introduction (one brief paragraph) and then get to the assignment key tasks
Provide a background of the organisation including its core functions and area(s) of expertise (700 words approximately).
Then, describe the selected group’s main role(s), goal(s) and actual contribution to the organisation (formally and/or informally if applicable). Here you need to explain why you think the group exists and how it performs – based on consistent integration of OB concepts: (700 words approximately)
Describe and analyse three to five members of the group; make sure the group leader is one of these (if you are a member of the group, and not the leader, your inclusion in this assignment is optional). Base this section around Organisational Behaviour (OB) related theories, concepts and ideas from Topics 1 through 6 of the unit. Employ well-placed and linked examples throughout. Here you need to assess and detail what each individual brings to the group context and how these individual characteristics impact positively and/or negatively on the functioning of the group based on rigorous OB theory integration: (2000 words approximately)
Brief summary or conclusion tying the discussion together: (100 words approximately)
