 This ruling of the EEOC ( This ruling of the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) ends the practice of segregated employment ads by gender and opens up many possibilities for women to seek higher paid employment in vastly more diverse career areas.

The above six events are all connected to the fight for women to gain entry into the workplace and have equal access to employment without discrimination due to gender.  Before the approval of the Birth Control Pill (1960), woman had very few options to plan or limit pregnancy.  This seriously limited their possibility of seeking work.  With the publication of ‘The Feminine Mystique’ in 1963, the dissatisfaction of women over their limited choices and roles in life was made public.  This was the first time women had a strong voice speaking out for themselves.

When the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, women finally were legally protected against employment discrimination but there were still ‘norms’ in place that made working difficult.   Even though the ‘Pill’ was approved in 1960, many states still had laws preventing married women from using contraception.  This situation was ended in 1965 with the Supreme Court Ruling (Griswold vs Connecticut) that ended state’s rights to legally prevent a married woman from using contraceptives. 

Finally, in 1966, The National Organization for Women (NOW), was established.  NOW became the first national organization dedicated to the furtherance of universal rights for women in all areas.  With the EEOC ruling (1967) that ‘sex segregated want ads’ were illegal, women could finally seek employment opportunities in areas that had previously been restricted only to men, offering them better pay and more diverse career possibilities.  Finally women could openly join the world of work with some prospect of parity in pay and job classification.
