Assessment: Group Work on Health Initiatives
In groups, you will complete a report identifying, and rating, health initiatives which could improve the quality and equity of health care in a rural and remote Australian Community. This report has been requested by a rural and remote community which has poor health outcomes according to national statistics. The federal government has indicated issues of concern to be:
1. Problems accessing health care for this rural and remote community.
2. Social exclusion and poor health care experienced by community members with disability.
3. Poor health outcomes among the communities Indigenous Australians.
4. Reluctance of newly settled migrant woman and children to seek health care.
Each group will describe and evaluate national and international health initiatives which they have identified. The report will demonstrate your knowledge of social determinants, disability and culture on access to health care for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians by your explanation of the causative factors involved in each of the issues 1-4 above. Each report will describe two or three possible health initiatives based on examples of existing projects sourced world-wide to lend credibility to your proposals. You will suggest adaptations to the initiatives to meet local needs and implementation strategies which include community engagement. The rural and remote community need not be identified by name or state. Discussion of causative factors need not form a significant part of the report, except as a rationale for the health initiatives chosen. You do not need an introduction about causative factors in relation to health care access. In inter-professional groups of 3-4 students you will write the report this community has requested. This information must be presented at a level appropriate to a community audience
