Assignment 1: Individual Reflection & Development Plan
Reflective thinking is an important aid to adult learning. Hence, we ask you to write a reflective
essay and consider your personal development as a cross-culturally competent professional.
You need to start the assignment a couple of weeks before the deadline.
Part 1. Individual reflection
The main topic to contemplate and write about in this part of Assignment 1 is this how you
experience Singapore’s culture and society. We ask you to conduct observations of your
personal, study and work environments for several weeks ahead of the deadline, while taking
notes for the assignment. It could be applied at the end of any workday, workweek, project, or
assignment. You can spend several minutes thinking about the experience you have been
through and what you can learn from it, about yourself and the society you live in. What you
write may be an insight into a management issue or it could be a new insight about human
behaviour or group functioning. It may be a practical idea that you can apply in a particular
situation. It may be something about yourself that you just now became aware of. In this
assignment, do feel free to express your personal views and do so in as individual way as
possible. The essays are going to be treated as private and will be read only by UCD / Kaplan
You can also supplement or illustrate your essay with references to relevant media sources,
such as films, books, articles, blogs etc. about Singapore or made / written in Singapore.
Being a personal reflection, Part 1 of Assignment 1 can be written in any format you choose.
It should be no longer than 700 words. Length is less important than conveying reflection and
evaluation of your learning experience. Ideally you will complete this part before the module
proceeds. You should read Chapter 1 of your textbook as part of your preparation.
Part 2: Your cultural intelligence development plan
At the beginning of the module, you will complete an in-class self-assessment of your cultural
intelligence and you will receive a report. Based on this report, we ask you to describe your
cultural intelligence and to draw your personal development plan as a cross-culturally
competent professional. Specifically, in Part 2 of Assignment 1, you will address the following:
1. Introduction. Based upon your cultural intelligence self-ratings, describe your cultural
intelligence in one sentence, in your own words. What cross-cultural challenges are you currently facing? You may refer to Part 1 of Assignment 1 in answering this question.
What future challenges or global opportunities do you want to pursue? (E.g. living in a
new country, working in multicultural teams, becoming a global leader)
2. Based upon your cultural intelligence self-ratings, identify your areas of strength and
areas for improvement. Have you observed these strengths and areas for improvement
in your cross-cultural interactions? How, if at all, does your current role in or outside of
college allow you to use your strengths or improve on your weaknesses?
3. Goals and action steps. In light of your current challenges, goals, and cultural intelligence
ratings, which two of the four cultural intelligence capabilities (drive, knowledge, strategy,
action) would you focus on the most now and why? Create a plan for developing the two
capabilities, listing one-month and six-month goals. To do so, list at least two specific
things you can do to build upon your strengths and/or to improve upon your weaknesses,
for each of the two capabilities you will focus on. What additional actions steps do you
need to implement long-term? Please be both ambitious and realistic in your plans.
Your development plan should follow the structure specified above and should be no longer
than 700 words.
Note: You will return to reflect on this development plan once again at the end of the module,
when completing your Assignment 2.
