Chose an area of crime that you are interested in and using a range of academic sources provide an overview which covers how widespread it is, who is involved, and the impact that it has on society and/or the communities affected. Be sure to emphasise why this is a problem which needs addressing.
Examples could include;
White collar crime
‘Terrorism’ related offences
(please check your choice with your seminar leader)
Part 2 – Intervention or Solution (500 words)
Propose a (realistic) intervention or solution to address the problem. This needs to be informed by a criminological theory/theories which relate to crime or offending. Make sure you draw upon academic sources in suggesting and justifying your proposal.
(You may suggest legalising or de-criminalising the offence if you believe this an appropriate course of action, but remember this needs to be realistic – academic sources will also need be used)
Example covered in the module
Problem: Street based violence
Solution: Violence Interruption programmes
Theoretical basis: Based on a medical model analogy. Violence is seen as contagious and as such able to be contained/stopped from spreading by means of interruption.
To pass this assessment you will need to draw upon a range of academic sources (Statistics, research reports, textbooks, journal articles etc). You will need a minimum of three sources.
Some suggestions will be provided on Weblearn, but you will be expected to find your own sources
