1. Sleep Deprivation (5 marks) Were Dotto’s experiences during sleep deprivation what you would expect them to be? Use research into the typical short-term consequences of sleep deprivation as the basis for discussing this issue. Use examples from the Dotto (2000) chapter to illustrate your answer. 2. Napping Part A (5 marks) Explain how sleep during a short nap would usually differ from normal nighttime sleep. Research the typical short-term effects of napping (you should consider positive and any potential negative effects of napping) and discuss whether Dotto’s experiences were consistent with this (using examples from the Dotto (2000) chapter to illustrate). “Short-term” in this case refers to immediate effects of taking a nap. Recommended sources of information for this question: unit textbook; other introductory textbooks; sleep textbooks; journal articles about napping.  
3. Napping Part B (7 marks) Research and describe some potential long-term consequences of regular napping (i.e., habitually napping on a regular basis). Note that you should NOT focus on short-term effects of napping here. You may choose to focus on a specific age group or population if you wish and can discuss positive and/or negative consequences of napping. Recommended sources of information for this question: unit textbook; other introductory textbooks; sleep textbooks; journal articles about napping.  
4. Application to Everyday life (6 marks) Find a magazine or newspaper article (this can be online) that is relevant to the psychology of sleep. For example, this could include a news article where sleep deprivation might be relevant, or about the impact of shift work. This should NOT be an article in an academic journal, it should be a regular newspaper    of magazine. Write a brief description of the magazine/newspaper article you have selected and explain how it relates to a research finding, theory, or concept about sleep that you have found in a textbook or academic journal article. In other words, is the magazine/newspaper article accurately depicting the sleep-related concept it is discussing? Make sure your answer also describes or defines the relevant research finding, theory or concept. To answer this question, you need to compare the magazine/newspaper article to a scientific source on the topic. However, you only need to use 1 such source (e.g., your textbook) for this question and do not need other references. Attach a copy of the newspaper/magazine article to your assignment as an appendix (this attachment is NOT counted in the page limit). Documents can be scanned using scanners located in the Abacus computing laboratories on campus and on every level of the Curtin library. If this is not possible, provide a link to the article instead.  
5. Research (6 marks) Use the Library Catalogue to find a peer-reviewed journal article (from 2006 or later) that reports on a piece of original research about a sleep-related disorder. Summarise the aim and the key findings of the study. What do the findings tell us about the disorder in question, and is there potential for the findings to be useful in a practical/real-world manner? Make sure you include the reference for the article in your reference list. Sleep-related disorders include conditions such as insomnia, sleep apnea, sleep paralysis, and many more. Please note, an original research study involves the collection of some form of data, and will include Participants, Method and Results sections. A review article, meta-analysis, or theoretical article is NOT appropriate for this question.  
Referencing (6 marks) Use in-text references for all material, paraphrase appropriately, and include a complete reference list. In- text and end-text references should be in APA (6th ed.) format. If quotes are used, they must be formatted according to APA (6th ed.) guidelines. See the following guidelines available from the Curtin library
