Select one of the topics listed below. Respond to the topic or question in the form of a short essay using the terms and concepts developed in the course. The re-screening of selected films basic library research and is an expectation of most topics below. All essays must contain specific discussion or visual analysis of scenes from the films.
Topic 1. Discuss cinematography — camera angles, camera distance, camera placement, camera movement, and lighting — in two films from class: Eat Drink, Man Woman, Aparajito, Water, Hero. Respond to the question, Why did the directors make these choices and what role do they play in storytelling, particularly in terms of establishing a mood or revealing character?
Topic 2. Discuss the soundtrack — voice, music, and sound effects — in two of the following films: Aparajito, Hero, Persepolis, Life on Earth. Respond to the question, How is the world of the story enhanced or made complete by the creative use of sound? How is it reflective of the realworld context and history of the films in question?
Topic 3. Orientalism is an ideology of racism based on the belief that: all Third World countries are basically the same; the Asian world is timeless and unchanging; human life is considered more precious in the West than in Asia (and Africa, the Middle East, etc.) Select two films from the course filmography and refute Orientalist ideology.
