For your FORMAL REPORT assignment you must choose an original topic, and analyze a live business case. It is essential that your report be based on both primary and secondary research. This means that you must not only consider secondary literature on your topic (i.e. books, periodicals, online journals, websites etc.), but also conduct surveys and/or interviews.

The formal report is based on a case study approach to solving a particular problem. This means that you will have to study a real life case, identify its problems, examine its different aspects, and then make recommendations to solve the problem.

Your topics must not be wide in scope in order to be suitable for this assignment. Your report must contain a financial analysis if a financial issue is part of the problem in your given case.

You may choose to investigate a problem in your place of employment:

•Purchase of property
•Managing current debt / financing your college degree

Owning a Businesses / Startup Company

You may choose to identify and investigate problems in an existing business and recommended solutions, or focus on the feasibility of opening a new business. Some examples:
•The benefits of hiring more employees, expanding current location, expanding into other markets
•Is getting into a particular type of business (i.e. catering business) financially viable for a specific individual within a specific market location (ie. downtown Toronto)?


College / Education
Identify problems, examine them from a business point of view, and made recommendations
