Case Study The definition of contemporary art and art gallery has changed with the passage of time. There is more number of modern contemporary galleries in all major cities across the globe. Because of the growing number of galleries and museums for a wide variety of art works, there is one debate that is about whether the art has taken a paradigm shift from being famous among the elitist to the world of the populists. Fundamentally the art gallery and museums are not for profit organisations running for the various benefit of the entire world of art and creativity. The gallery can also be public owned that are mainly engaged in displaying the certain collection of art based on the type of gallery. There are also private galleries, which act as commercial vehicles for the collectors or the owners who want to exhibit and sell. In Australia and other common wealth nations, gallery means the publicly owned galleries with the specification of private galleries being owned by individuals; at the same time the museums are generally understood to be owned by the institutions to exhibit the pieces of work with historical value. Presently the concept of art gallery in Australian art scenario is moving towards a mixture of free exhibition and revenue centric approach. They act as the place to attract private investors and art collectors (mostly the high net worth individuals) with a pursuit of collecting various art collections across the globe. In Victoria, there are a number of big auction house-cum-art museums, who are regularly on a lookout for acquiring antiques from anonymous sellers and donors. Antiques may be a painting, sculpture, memorabilia or any other piece of historic significance. Melbourne is considered as the heart of the Australian arts market in terms of the opportunity it provides to both the investors and the general public as well the art enthusiasts. The city has a number of very old and valuable museums run by the federal government and non for profit organisations, as well as a wide variety of commercial galleries which are run as for profit entities. Although there are various types of galleries and museums running with different motives, there has been an array of problems and challenges with respect to the way they operate and towards the future of the galleries. The problems for the galleries and museums range from the stricter rules and regulations to the ability to adapt in the internet age. Advent of online auction sites and investment of private investors in the reselling market has been also a concern for the museums run by institutions and not for profit organisations.  Although disruptive technology will be there in the market place, the galleries need to find their way out in order to move on and succeed (Fisher, 2012; Goldstein, 2013).
