You should avoid using references sourced directly from the internet (i.e. references with http://www … addresses) as these references have dubious academic value. Practitioner magazines, business publications (i.e. Fortune or Business Review Weekly) and newspaper articles may be used for illustrative purposes only (i.e. they may not be used to support your main argument but materials in them may be summarised to provide very brief examples). Preparatory reading for the assignment Students should primarily focus on modules 3, 4 and 5 of the course before embarking on the assignment. Instructions for writing essays Please read the following requirements carefully and also make sure that you understand the requirements of the assignment topic. Failure to do this may result in academic failure on this item of assessment. In preparing your essay, you should refer to chapter 5 ‘Essay writing’ in: Summers and Smith 2010, Communication skills handbook, 3rd edn, revised, John Wiley and Sons. The use of subtitles is encouraged in the development of your essay however, these should be used sparingly. Keep subtitles short, simple and relevant to the content which they represent. It is important for assignments to have standard subtitles for the Introduction and Conclusion. In the introduction, you should set out the nature of the issues or problems for discussion and analysis and explain why the issues are important for consideration. You should link themes or issues together in an academic way in order to show the significance of relationships, rather than say what you will be doing step by step. The process of linking ideas together to show the importance of relationships is an academic way to build sound logic in your work. This is very important. Before you can make these links (logic) you must be able to commit analysis of the topic to key theory based on your own critical thinking processes. These academic stages (if you like) should be the basis of your scholarly writing for producing high quality work. A natural order of progression for analysis could be seen in this way: Your conclusion should draw the main threads of your argument together, based on the outline contained in your introduction. It should summarise the importance or significance of the main themes in your paper. No new material or quotes should be given at this stage of your essay. Your essay will be marked in accordance with the assessment criteria shown on the following page. In the process of marking, a copy of the assessment criteria page with comments will be attached to the front of your paper and returned to you. If you do not address the assessment criteria as shown you will lose marks accordingly. This can easily result in failure for an item of assessment, or in many cases a reduced mark, which will usually cause disappointment.
