Australian Higher Education Sector
The Bradley “Review of Australian Higher Education Report” is forcing
universities and TAFE to embrace more competitive business models.
Empowered consumers are testing tertiary institutions’ market
responsiveness and generating previously unseen levels of competition.
The stakes are high. If past experience with industry deregulation is
anything to go by decades of competitive advantage will be on offer for
those institutions able to capitalise on the upside of sector volatility without
being over-exposed to the downside risks.
Objective evaluation of market performance potential will become more
commonplace and strategic analyses more sophisticated as competition in
the higher education sector strengthens. We propose a framework that
enables higher education institutions to assess their performance against
the requirements of sector reform in four areas: 1) Strategies that
differentiate, 2) Governance that enables, 3) Capabilities that sustain and
4) Leadership that impacts (Vilojoen & Newman, 2012:2).
First, read the document by Vilojoen & Newman (2012) available
on Moodle or
Second, using strategic management literature, in particular
refereed journals and texts, as well as industry journals, internet
sites, etc., undertake your own strategic analysis of the higher
education sector in Australia. Your analysis must include the four
areas identified above by Vilojoen and Newman (2012), but you
may also include other relevant areas for consideration.g rubric.
