The following assignment is to be completed in self-selected groups of between three and six people. Your task is to interview a person from your or another organization, who has worked overseas for a period of time. The organization they worked for can be profit/non-profit; private/public). His or her nationality is not important, but it is important that they have lived and worked for a while (at least six months) in a country other than their own. The purpose of the assignment is twofold: 1. To critically evaluate the various theories and frameworks we have discussed during class. 2. To help you understand the issues facing people who work and live in a culture different than the one they grew in. In preparing the interview and the report, pay attention to the following points: ï‚· First, identify an expatriate you would like to interview. You will probably need somewhere between 30 minutes and one hour to interview the person you have chosen to speak to for this exercise. ï‚· Establish contact and ask the person if they are willing to be interviewed. It is best to conduct the interview face-to-face. However, in certain cases you may need to use other formats, such as Skype. ï‚· Make a list of the topics you which to address in the interview and compose questions to address each topic. Structure a general interview plan (e.g., the order of questions) before commencing the interview. You can decide what question to ask but the interview needs to cover the following areas at least: 1. Describe the styles of leadership in the country you worked in. Did leaders tend to give direction, expect obedience or did they engage in a more participative style of leadership? 2. In general, were decisions make through discussion and consensus or voting, or by individual in powerful positions in the organization? 3. What types of performance management and reward system were in place in the organization? Were they group based on focused on the individual? 4. Describe structure of the organization; the organization chart. How did the structure influence decision making and communications in the organization? 5. Did people in the organization communicate freely? For example, would it have been acceptable to approach someone very senior in your organization on issues? 6. What was the overall culture of the organization like? What it caring, risk averse, individualist or something different? 7. Was there an emphasis on individual or team work? Did teams work well in your experience? ï‚· At the interview: you may ask your interviewee’s permission to be recorded—that will help you being more relaxed and natural during the conversation. Alternatively, assign one of the team members to take notes, while the other conducts the interview.
