TASK 1 – Office Staff (Total 50 marks)

1c The new office (company) will be tasked with the management of 10 ships.

This will be made up of 2 fleets of 5 ships. Fleet A will be 5 bulk carriers and

Fleet B will be of 5 oil tankers. The details of each ship type are supplied in

Appendix. Therefore you need to construct the mix of office staff to

effectively and efficiently manage these vessels. This must reflect the

operational needs and support the management disciplines that you will

supply. List the job titles that for each person employed in the office (5

1d In respect of the office and staff members: construct a table with columns

showing the following details:

Title of each position held in the office; nationality of person holding that

position; gross monthly salary; gross annual salary; additional costs (it is for

you to state what you believe the additional costs are. This could be

relocation costs; expatriate contracts or other such items which the

company will have to bear)

List the number of people for each job title identified. Place against them

the annual salary for each job title. In some cases a job title will have more

than one person so for example you may have a fleet manager – bulk

carriers and a fleet manager – oil tankers. Therefore identify then

individually and do not place them together under one title. (This salary is 

what you think to be an appropriate amount and is to be presented in US$

1e Draw the organigram showing the relationship of the job titles so that the

operation of the company can be identified (20 marks) (no word count)

1f Identify the cost of the office per year using the cost per square foot per

year and using 120 square foot per person employed. Use the figures

supplied against the relevant Appendix. In addition, you must include the

additional costs of running an office and apply these accordingly to your

answer. This requires you do look at the location you have chosen and

research what the costs would be for utilities etc. (5 marks) (20 words)

TASK 2 Crew Costs (Total 50 marks)

2a Identify the crew number for each ship type. Identify the ranks required

and the number of persons per rank for each ship type. This should reflect

against the standards set by the flag State where each ship has been

registered. (20 marks) (no word count)

2b Against each rank identify the nationality, the monthly salary required and

any other additional costs incurred. You will then be able to assess the cost

per year per ship and then multiply by 5 for each ship of each type to

identify the total crew costs for the total managed fleet. You need to

present two sets of crew and costs one each for Fleet A and Fleet B.

This will allow you to present to the ship owner the potential costs for

operating the ships. It may be that you decide to offer crew management to

the fleet. What additional office costs would you expect to have if this offer

2c Tanker tour of duty is normally less than that for bulk carriers and salaries

are higher. Supply an answer if you will continue this difference or what you

intend to do for the crews on your ships. (10 marks) (100 words)

TASK 3 Management Fees (50 marks)

3a You can only have one office at one site. You cannot sub-contract out and

all business for the company will be carried out in house.

This will affect the number of persons employed in the office and the

diversity of the staff. (5 marks) (50 words)

3b Using the table provided in the appendices, identify the services that you

will supply and the management fees that will be generated. This will be the

income for the office per month and per year. (5 marks) (50 words)

3c From the annual figure that you will generate from the table above, subtract

the cost of the office rental; the office staff costs and state what you would

expect to achieve whether profit or loss. In addition, where you have

identified additional costs these should be included as they affect the

balance sheet. (10 marks) (150 words)

3d Supply a short explanation of where the company is and the changes that

will be required to either increase profit or reduce loss. (10 marks) (150

TASK 4 Report to the Board of Spatial Asset Management

4a From your findings in the previous tasks prepare a formal document for

presentation to the Board of Spatial Asset Partnership. These are the

people who will have the final say as to whether the project will go ahead or

not. They will expect a professional document, so prepare what you believe

is the appropriate way to present the work you have carried out. Remember

this work when presented will be the first time that the Board of Directors

have seen what has been carried out and that you are able to support your

decisions made.
