Employability and Professional Development
Employability & Careers: A Zedex Case Study.
Throughout their history, Zedex’ spirit of innovation has inspired ground breaking ideas that have moved the entire industry forward. They were one of first banks to issue a credit card, launch cashpoint machines, setup a website and offer a carbon- neutral debit card.
Not surprisingly, their fresh-thinking approach also makes them an inspirational place to develop a graduate career.
That could be in Business banking, Retail banking, Tax, Treasury, Finance, IT, HR, Marketing and Chief Administration Office. Each business area runs its own structured training program lasting between one and three years. Graduates often get a real insight into how the area operates, enjoy a high profile association and learn from business leaders.
Zedex looks for a strong academic background. But the right attitude is just as important as a “quick brain”. Graduates must be ambitious and focused with the drive and initiative to improve on what’s gone before.
What has been done outside of academia - placement, gap years, voluntary work, sporting or cultural activities that may have involved some teamwork or showcasing some special “work relevant” skill for example – will also help Zedex decide whether applicants have the potential to make a real impact on their business.
Expected formal training, on-the-job learning, and study leave to help gain professional qualifications and up to £4000.00 to invest in personal development that’s relevant to the role. What’s more, graduate development won’t stop when the programme ends. Career-long learning is a way of life at Zedex and will encourage successful applicants to really make a mark and get on.
Zedex have 50 IT Vacant Job Positions that must be filled within the IT Department. One of these positions (Junior Database Administrator) has been forwarded to WLCBMS to be advertised and possibly provide a group of suitable students for this graduate position.
As an EPD student it is hoped that you will use your knowledge of best practice methods acquired in this module alongside your acquired database and generic skills acquired within and outside of your HND CSD module.
Your EPD lecturer has been given the task of selecting the best Candidates for the subsequent interview process at Zedex.
A copy of the advertised Job and Person specification has been advertised on moodle and can be downloaded for your perusal.
With a career in IT, being unique and having employable skills is equally important, it is therefore necessary for you to:
a. Reflect on your own personal skills and competences against professional standards and that of Zedex’s organizational objectives to determine whether you are up to date and confident enough to match their expectations using the Career Edge questionnaire.
b. Evaluate your own development needs and the activities required to meet them to be in a position to contribute to Zedex’s history of continuous innovation as well as the specific job requirements.
c. Devise a personal and professional development plan based on your identified needs.
d. Reflect on own developmental progress against the original aims and objectives set in the personal and professional development plan.
In Project oriented organizations such as Zedex, ability to communicate and work to strict deadlines is essential.
a. Identify the Communications need within an organizational context and come up with the appropriate styles to adopt within 3 levels of the organisation
b. Demonstrate in writing how effective time management strategies will help your small team of three become efficient and comply with the “clear desk policy”
