Mr Adonis is a 29-year-old Greek tourist who presents to the Emergency Department with acute shortness of breath. He has no personal history of respiratory illness, and no known family history of any respiratory condition. He states he does get eczema intermittently, particularly in Spring. Mr Adonis states he has associated symptoms of chest tightness, cough, and wheeze. When questioned about his social history, he states he smokes cigarettes (15 per day), and does very little exercise.
Mr Adonis is in moderate respiratory distress, speaking in short phrases. He is afebrile, with a blood pressure of 106/62 mmHg, a regular pulse of 128pm, a respiratory rate of 32 breaths/min, and an oxygen saturation of 92% while breathing room air. The plan for Mr Adonis is to admit him to the medical ward for observation and medication management.
Mr Adonis is anxious and says he feels guilty about his lifestyle, which he considers has contributed to his admission today.
