Glastonbury Festival Workforce Management Although there are a considerable number of payed employment opportunities in the event sector, volunteering placements still occupy central stage. Staffing for the UK biggest music festival is no different, as it heavily relies upon the use of unpaid workforce. Glastonbury organisers and their HR team work collaboratively with Oxfam, which is the largest recruiter of stewards and helpers for the festival.Stewarding roles include manning gates, such as entrance gates, being responsible for fire towers, monitoring appropriate accreditations for accessible viewing platforms, monitoring crowd levels around the stage, chaperoning vehicles and finally being a response team stewards, whereby volunteers are on standby at the start of the shift to fill any gaps there may be around the site and also to help with unplanned situations that may arise on the site. This initiative is very popular and the volunteer places quickly fill up, leading to waiting lists if any volunteers drop out for any reason. As one volunteer steward noted: ‘’Stewarding is the way forward; free festival tickets and fab friends, fun in the sun and raves in the rain, summer will never be the same again’’.TASK 1 a)Discuss the reasons, justifying why an event, such as Glastonbury Festival would seek to recruit volunteers as a major component of their workforce.
