Ethical dilemmas represent complex situations in which the decision taking is too hard. This type of situations gives the challenge of determining what to do and what to not. In an ethical dilemma, a person has to take a decision that is the best possible solution for the situation (Raymond, 2009). Uncomfortable situations without any choice of actions can't be treated as ethical dilemmas. Solving the ethical dilemmas is associated with the ethical systems and the moral code and sometimes also called as the ethical paradox (Allan and Love, 2010). The case study of this assignment is about an ethical dilemma in an office regarding the issue of dealing with a staff regarding her performance at the workplace. 

Description of the dilemma:

Maria is a junior staff of a corporate office. She has the need of full-time work because of the financial problems. Currently she is facing some problems in the workplace because of her old and ill mother. She is facing some difficulties with the care of her mother and that's why she s unable to attend some of the important team meeting of the office which are generally held at the morning. She is taking too much early leaves for this reason. She is an efficient employee of the office but because of the absences she is getting too much pressure and her colleagues are also facing a high load of work. Some of the male colleagues are started saying that the office is not the right place for the women. They are saying that women should stay at their homes doing the works of the home. These are putting Maria under a huge stress at the work place. Her manager is aware of the fact that her flow of work as well as the environment of the office is getting affected by the situation. Now the question is what will be the right action of the manager in this dilemma.

Ethical questions regarding the dilemma:

What are the relevant facts of the dilemma?

Who are getting affected by the dilemma?

What are the effects of the dilemma on the office?

Should she get any special leave or facilities?

What are the provisions that can be considered or neglected?

Is she violating any corporate norms or disturbing the culture of the office?

Is the behaviour of the male staffs are non-ethical and aggressive?

Solution to the Dilemma:

In order to solve the dilemma, the manager of the office should identify the relevant facts behind the dilemma. The manager needs to take care about the dilemma in a fair and straightforward manner. In this case, the consideration of the policies and guidelines of the company is very much needed (Derbyshire, 2008). The act of the manager should be fair to the junior member Maria and the other staffs who are affected by this situation. Discussion with all the team members and the team leader is needed to understand the situation of the office. She is an efficient employee and the situation is based on a temporary problem. Therefore, some flexibility should be given to her in this situation. The manager should try to arrange the important team meetings not in the morning. The staff should be given the facility of work from home if possible. The manager has to deal with the male staffs regarding their behaviour to Maria at the office. The behaviours of the team members are the cause of mental harassment of the female staff. The team members should be reminded to behave gentle to other staffs and respecting others (Gingerich, 2000). It is known to the office management that the employee has financial problems. In this case, some financial help can be provided to the staff for keeping a nurse at her home for taking care of her mother. The amount of money may be deducted from her salary in instalment.  If the situation is not under the control of the manager, then it should be discussed with the higher authority of the company. All time it is necessary to keep the confidentiality of the staffs. In order to do the best practice for solving the dilemma, legal assistance is needed (Garber, 2008).

Code of ethical practice:

Appropriate decisions taking at the time of the ethical dilemmas at the workplaces is challenging work. Ethical practices should be done by maintaining the following factors:

Professional standards: In the professional standards of the ethical practices within the workplace, one has to maintain the safety of all the staffs. The individual right of the people should be promoted to all the members (Spence, 2011).  The professional have to treat all the people by equal level of sensitivity with respect to their ability and activeness. The respect should be given to all regardless their gender, age, occupation, economical condition, marital status, sex, religion or political opinion. When any activity of a member is affecting the work of other members, then the proper action is needed to be taken by the professional (Ortmeier and Meese, 2010).

Relationships: At the workplace, the professionalism must be maintained with all the working professionals regardless the personal relationships with them. Any intimate relationship should not be exists between the staffs (Erwin, 2010).

Privacy: Safeguarding and keeping the confidentiality is very much needed for the professionals at the workplace. Disclose of the confidential information of any member should be done with the permission of the member (Harris, 2010).

General: Flexibility at the workplaces should be provided to the employees. All the facilities should be provided, and the actions have to be taken by maintaining all the ethical issues. Any law should be breached at any moment in the workplaces (Tigerman, 2008).


Solving the ethical dilemmas at the workplaces is a very hard job. The professionals need to understand the whole situation and the actual fact behind the dilemma at the initial level. The situation described as the case study in this assignment is very critical for handling. The junior employee is very important to the company, and any wrong decision can't be taken in this situation. Therefore, the manager should take any decision by following the mentions solving processes and the proposed code of ethics. Possible facilities should be provided to her. Respecting other staffs at the workplace is necessary for the ethical practice.
