The Australian government has responded to the threat of terrorism exemplified by the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York by introducing a number of counter-terrorism laws into law.  One such law is the Anti-Terrorism Act (No 2) 2005 (Cth) which introduced a number of counter-terrorism measures into the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). Some regard these laws as a realistic response to an ever-increasing threat to civil society, whilst others have criticised them for being harsh and undemocratic.

Please review the academic literature regarding this topic, ensuring that you compare and contrast the various arguments which have been made, highlight any major areas of disagreement, and identify what issues (if any) have not been discussed.
