Research Literature

Question

Answered

A critical part of constructing a research project proposal is to review the literature related to the proposed topic. In this assessment item you will review two research publications related to your choice of individual research topic. (The research topic you will use for Assessment Items 2 and 3 will usually be different from the one you used for the first group assessment item because all the individual research topics must be unique.) Motivation Reading the research literature can help you develop a research project proposal in a variety of ways: • By telling you if your research idea is new. You need to check the literature to determine the state-of-the-art in your research area. If you find that someone else has already solved the problem then your proposed project no longer meets the definition of “research”! • By helping you define and refine your research topic. Reviewing the existing literature on the subject can help you define a new research project idea, or improve an existing one. Recall that two important ways of identifying a promising research idea are “gap spotting,” i.e., identifying something that hasn’t been done before, and “problematization,” i.e., identifying something that has been attempted before but could be done better. Both of these techniques depend on reviewing the research literature to see what has already been done. • By providing a starting point for your research method. It is very rare for a research project to begin without building on the work of previous researchers. (Projects that do so are either revolutionary, earth-shaking ideas that change our understanding of the universe, e.g., the theories of relativity and evolution, or crackpot ideas that ignore existing scientific knowledge and will lead nowhere, e.g., alchemy and perpetual motion machines!) An understanding of existing principles, processes and tools in your chosen research area gives you a firm basis on which to build your own contribution to knowledge. Where to find research publications Research results are published in a variety of ways, but not all such reports are suitable as the basis for constructing a detailed research project proposal. Generally speaking, we will accept research publications from the following trustworthy sources as the basis for this assessment item: • Peer-reviewed publications in the academic/scientific literature, including peer-reviewed papers in conference proceedings, peer-reviewed journal articles and peer-reviewed books or book chapters. See below for ways to tell if a publication is peer-reviewed. • Research (a.k.a. “technical”) reports from major IT organisations, including Microsoft, Google, Oracle, IBM, etc. Large organisations with their own dedicated research facilities will often publish their research results online as “technical reports.” Usually this is done to stake a claim to the idea as early as possible, without waiting for the report to go through a formal publication process (which can take months or even years), but the report will typically be published in the usual academic/scientific literature at a later date. Depending on the nature of the research topic, we will also accept the following kinds of publications, provided they contain detailed, substantial ideas or contributions to knowledge. • White papers from large government organisations, usually state or federal. These typically consist of the results of qualitative or quantitative surveys conducted to determine the electorate’s opinion on some topic relevant to governance. • Patent applications. Patents are a way of protecting intellectual property and, as such, they consist of proposals for new products or processes. They should be treated with a great deal of caution, however, because most such ideas have yet to be proven in practice and will ultimately be found unworkable, impractical or simply wrong. (For instance, patent offices receive numerous applications for perpetual motion machines, all of which violate the established laws of physics, so just because someone has submitted a patent application doesn’t mean that their idea makes sense.) However, the following sources of research information are not suitable for this assessment item. • Commercial advertising, copyright claims and trademarking. Advertisements are full of unsubstantiated claims and are inevitably too brief to use as the basis for a research project proposal. • Mass media news reports, including newspaper articles, magazine articles, radio reports, television reports, web sites, wikis, and blogs. None of these sources contain sufficiently-detailed technical information, and none of them can be considered trustworthy, no matter how well-intentioned, because their contents are not peer-reviewed by experts in the field. • Non-peer reviewed papers and books, especially “pay-to-publish,” “selfpublished” or “vanity” publications. Many independent publishers will print an author’s manuscript for a fee, with no quality control whatsoever. This includes self-published books in specialised areas that would not be commercially viable, e.g., local histories and biographies, and books on dubious topics that would not pass editorial scrutiny of their content, especially on paranormal topics such as ghosts, UFOs, etc. Simply because a document has been professionally printed with a nice cardboard cover is no guarantee of scientific validity! If you are in doubt about the suitability of a publication for this assessment item, please feel free to ask one of the teaching staff. How to tell if a publication is peer-reviewed The “peer review” process is the fundamental way in which the quality of academic and scientific research publications is checked. When an author submits a draft manuscript to a conference or journal, copies are sent out to several reviewers who are experts in the technical field. Their assessments of the manuscript determine whether or not the manuscript is worthy of publication. If you choose conference papers or journal articles to analyse for this assessment item you should ensure that they have been properly peer-reviewed. To do so there are two things you should check: • Ensure that there is an editorial board (for journal articles) or program committee (for papers in conference proceedings) of experts who are in charge of the peer-review process. • Check the “Instructions for Authors” for a clear statement that submitted manuscripts will be peer-reviewed. For journals the authors’ instructions will normally be found on the journal’s web site. For conferences the authors’ instructions will normally be in the “Call for Papers” for that conference. Doing this will give you some confidence that the publications you have chosen are of good quality. (This process is far from perfect, however. Poor-quality papers can slip through the cracks and be published in otherwise good-quality conferences or journals. Even worse, some conferences and journals are financially motivated and have low academic standards, so we must always make our own assessment of a publication’s worth.) How to tell if a publication is “substantial” For the purposes of this assessment item the two publications you choose must contain a substantial amount of data or technical content related to your chosen research topic. The academic/scientific research literature contains many kinds of publications. The following publication categories would typically be considered acceptable for this assessment item: • Full research papers published in peer-reviewed conference proceedings. • Full research articles published in peer-reviewed journals. The meaning of a “full” paper depends on the publication venue. Quantity is not necessarily a measure of quality, but we would typically expect a “full” research publication to be at least six pages long, often many more. Papers shorter than this are unlikely to contain important results unless they are exceptionally concise. However the following kinds of publications will usually not be suitable for our purposes: • Extended abstracts or “short papers” published in conference proceedings or journals. These are very brief summary papers, usually between two to four pages, and typically don’t have enough technical detail to be very helpful. • “Position papers” published in conference proceedings or journals. These are usually brief non-technical summaries of an organisation’s or individual’s attitude on a particular topic, and typically do not contain original research results. • Brief articles in professional magazines/periodicals/trade journals. Articles published in “glossy” magazines produced by professional associations are often mere summaries of research results, rather than the detailed research itself. The boundaries between the various categories of publication mentioned above can be unclear, however. For instance, survey papers that review the recent literature on a technical topic can be very helpful in tracking down research results relevant to a particular technical area, but not all survey papers contain original research results and conclusions. Again, if in doubt about a publication’s suitability, ask the teaching staff. What you are required to do For the purposes of this assessment item you are required to critically analyse two research publications relevant to your chosen (individual) research topic. You will submit the results of your analyses as the answers to a series of short-answer questions in Blackboard. These will be assessed based on the clarity, completeness and cogency of your arguments. Specifically, you will need to complete the following steps: 1. Define a new research topic of personal interest. This will typically be a different topic than the one you used for the previous group assessment item. You will use this new research topic for both this assessment item and the next one. If you are planning to do a “project unit” later in your course it would be beneficial if you can develop a research topic that could serve as the starting point for that project. The research topic does not need to be perfect at this stage because you will have an opportunity to refine it in the next assessment item. (Indeed, it is highly likely that you will want to, based on what you discover from this literature analysis.) 2. Find two research publications directly relevant to your chosen research topic. Search the academic/scientific for two research publications relevant to your chosen topic, using the literature search techniques presented earlier in the semester. Your chosen publications must be “substantial” and of highquality as explained above. 3. Review these publications in detail to ensure they contain important and useful research results. In effect, we are asking you to undertake a process similar to that of “peer review,” assessing each publication’s originality, significance and relevance. Doing so will give you a detailed understanding of each publication’s content. You will present your findings by answering a set of questions about both publications as illustrated in the example below. You will also be required to submit annotated copies of the two publications, so that we can cross reference your answers against the publications themselves. 4. Determine how the results appearing in the publications can contribute to your proposed research project. Now that you have a clear understanding of each publication’s content, you will be required to explain how the presented research results can contribute to your own proposed research project. Typically this may happen in one or more of the following ways: a. The publication contains evidence that the research topic you have chosen is an important one by, for instance, by showing that there is a pressing need for the outcomes of your proposed project (“gap analysis”). b. The publication motivates your chosen research topic by presenting previous results in the area that have clear weaknesses that you believe you can fix (“problematization”). c. The publication contains previous results on which your own research project can build, either by directly incorporating the published principles, processes or tools into your own, or by suggesting a research approach that you can adapt for your own purposes. It is unlikely that you will be able to follow the four steps above in a strict sequence. Once you start studying the literature you may find that someone else has already made significant progress on your proposed research idea, or you may discover previous work in the area that makes you rethink your topic entirely. You should be prepared to revise your initial research project topic in response to what you find in the published literature. Cross referencing To help us relate your answers to the publications themselves, you will be required to provide cross references from your answers to the publications and vice versa. In your answers you should refer to the specific part or parts of the publication you are discussing, typically by section and/or page numbers. You will also be required to submit copies of each publication with the portions relevant to your answers clearly highlighted via annotations that refer to the question numbers. How to submit your solution You will submit your work using Blackboard (via a link under Assessment) as the responses to a series of short-answer questions. You should prepare your answers in a separate document first and paste them into Blackboard when you’ve finished. You will also be required to upload annotated copies of the two publications you review. The deadline for submission is midnight on Wednesday
