Newer waste streams, such as electrical and electronic waste (e-waste), hazardous waste, health-care and plastic waste, construction and demolition (C&D) waste, etc, have surfaced, posing bigger challenges to those responsible for waste management. The proper management of solid wastes is a major problem in many countries around the world. Waste management has also become a major concern for emerging and poorer economies that do not have adequate infrastructure and services, and lack comprehensive waste management related policies and legislation. Constraints on financial resources and technical knowhow compound the problem. Unless capacities at regional/local level are enhanced and sustained, poor management of waste will have adverse impacts on human health and ecosystems, degrade our limited natural resources, and hamper economic development and livelihoods of people. This unit investigates the problems associated with the generation of solid waste around the world, resulting health and environmental impacts and describes the functional elements of a solid waste management system used to solve the solid waste problem. The unit also investigates how the concept of integrated solid waste management can be used to manage the solid waste problems. The ‘recyclable waste’ components segregated at source is sent to MRFs to recover valuable materials like fuel and fertilizer, paper, plastics, metals and glass; while the remaining wastes and the ‘residuals’ from the recycling facilities are sent to the ‘landfills’ for their final disposal. In this unit we will examine the methods used in separation and processing of solid waste and learn about the basic concepts and applications of MRFs. The consumer market generates the solid waste that must be collected and made available to the intermediate (brokers and processors) markets. The brokers buy and sell scrap material and arrange for its transport to markets. The processors sort, bale, shred and grind these scrap or secondary material to be sold to a manufacturer or re-manufacturer of recycled products. Finally the consumers must purchase new products containing recycled content. Recycling reduces costs of landfilling and incineration of waste. It also reduces the cost of closing landfills, siting new landfills, clean-up and maintenance costs and costs of environmental controls. Products made from recycled materials usually require far less energy to manufacture than those made from virgin materials. Similarly, recycled glass melts at lower temperatures, so it reduces energy consumption and extends the lives of melting furnaces. Recycling process also conserves natural resources and reduces the need for mining and drilling activities. Biological treatment of organic waste, such as food waste, garden waste and sludge is common both in developed and developing countries. Advantages of the biological treatment include: reduced volume in the waste material, stabilisation of the waste, destruction of pathogens in the waste material, and production of biogas for energy use. The end products of the biological treatment can be recycled as fertiliser and used as a soil amendment. This unit examines the types of recyclable materials in solid waste and how design and implement a recycling program in your community. The unit also looks at biological treatment processes such as composting and anaerobic digestion of organic. Thermal combustion of municipal solid waste by incineration technology leads to energy generation and also volume reduction, so that much lesser amounts of ‘burnt waste residues’ goes to the landfills for final disposal, and also there are no problems related to ‘leachate production’ and ‘landfill gas emission’ at the landfill sites. But this also accompanies emissions of some toxic combustible gases which needs constant monitoring and control. This unit examines the basic concepts of solid waste incineration and the types of technologies used to achieve combustion. The unit also investigates the environmental controls used in incinerations systems. Finally the unit describes the concepts and methods of recovering energy from solid wastes. Sanitary landfills provide for the environmentally sound disposal of waste that cannot be reduced, recycled, composted, combusted, or processed in some other manner. A landfill is needed for disposing of residues from recycling, composting, combustion, or other processing facilities and can be used if the alternative facilities break down. A properly designed sanitary landfill includes provisions for leachate management and the possible collection of landfill gas and its potential use as an energy source. Innovative planning will also facilitate productive use of the landfill property after closure. Good design and operation will also limit the effort and cost necessary for maintaining the landfill after final site closure. This unit provides an introduction to sanitary landfills by providing an information base for design, operation and closure of landfills. Waste management based on treatment and disposal only is not helping many countries to cope with this rapid increase. Instead, practices based upon 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) are seen as the way to go towards achieving a resource-efficient zero waste society. It is imperative that a green economy attaches significant importance to the need to move towards a resource‐efficient and zero waste society.
