TASK:

Nutritional treatment strategies for the effective management of health conditions require

adherence to particular dietary patterns. Foods with specific therapeutic actions can be

incorporated into the dietary pattern to enhance the treatment strategy.

For each of the 4 (four) cases below choose 1 (one) specific food (e.g. one fruit, vegetable, herb,

spice, grain, legume, nut, seed, animal food, medicinal mushroom, algae or other) that could be

included as part of the treatment strategy for each case. For each of the 4 (four) foods chosen,

explain which constituents contribute to the therapeutic actions of the food, describe the level of

evidence currently available to support the therapeutic use, discuss techniques for ensuring

optimal bioavailability, recommend appropriate quantities that need to be consumed for a

therapeutic effect and discuss relevant cautions or contraindications.

Case 1: Steve is a 40 year old man who wants to be proactive about reducing his risk of

developing prostate cancer.

Case 2: Marion is a 43 year old woman who suffers from constipation and haemorrhoids. Her

stools are difficult to pass and this is impacting on the quality of her life. She also has varicose

veins and her legs feel heavy and tired by the end of the day.

Case 3: Rob is 50 year old man whose parents both suffer from dementia. He wants to be

proactive about reducing his risk of developing dementia.

Case 4: Kelly is a 35 year old woman who has ulcerative colitis. She is currently in remission and

wants to be proactive about reducing the risk of a flare up of her condition.
