Assignment due: 19/10/2015 by 1pm. WORD LIMIT: 600-800 words.
I’m required to select one of the characters in the poems “On children†by Kahlil Gibran or “Collateral Damage†by Norm Neill. Speaking in the role of my Chosen character, I’m to script a monologue in response to an issue/issues raised in the poem. The monologue should construct a particular representation of my chosen character and should invite a particular reading of the character and the issue.
For example, you could choose the poem, “Collateral Damage†by Norm Neil and write the monologue from the perspective of the sniper just like my friend’s assignment attached but make sure they are not the same because we will have to upload our monologue into Turnitin.
There are two characters presented in the Poem “On Children†by Kahlil. These characters are Children and parents.
• 19-20year old child(boy).
• Left his parents.
• Where? At home alone. On Facebook.
- Reads his older sister’s Facebook status that, she got a job as a principle and remembers leaving his parents.
You can choose any of the poems, but I would like you to choose the poem, “on Children†by Kahlil Gibran and write a monologue from the perspective of a 19-20years old child(boy) who left his parents and lives with his friends. He left his family because he thought his parents were restricting him and treating him like a baby. He also thought his parents had no faith in him. When actually what all his parents wanted, was just for him to succeed. So they wanted him to have a successful future and have better life. The monologue should reveal how children misunderstand their parents when it comes to guidance.
His parents didn’t want him to come late at home. They wanted him to focus on his study and they loved him and they were ready to support him whatever he needed for his study. They didn’t want him to smoke and hang around with bad friends who smoke/drugs. They didn’t want to get trouble.
Sometimes they would give him money to go to the cinema. They used give him pocket money to eat from the school canteen/tuckshop. They bought a car for him when he got his red P in grade 12.
His friends used make fun of him and call him a mummy boy.
When he graduated from high school, he left his family at age 17(and 8months) to live with his friends. He took his car. They started drinking a lot. He started smoking and at times would not go Uni. He dropped out of uni in the middle of his 2nd year at uni. He would run out of money. So he wasn’t managing his money(youth allowance from Centrelink) well. Couldn’t get money for his car. So he decided to sell car as he could get fuel money.
Sometimes he would get in trouble. His friends would hide his id’s and wallet for fun and one time they(his friends) lost his wallet with all his ids inside and some money while they were trying to hide. Friends would finish the food he buys. (I can’t remember all the things. I hope u have enough information now about this character(boy).)
Now, he regrets the decision he made to leave his family and live with his friends. He believes if he wold have stayed and listened to his parents. He would have been successful. He knows that his parents wanted him to be successful and he misunderstood what his parents wanted.
I really need you to script monologue from the perspective of this 19-20years old boy and I need the monologue to show how children misunderstand parents’ guidance. Parents want children to be successful and children misunderstand parents’ guidance.
