You must complete the following tasks and questions. Read all the questions before you commence the tasks. The schedule is to be developed in an appropriately named Microsoft Project 2010 file (see below) and the questions are to be answered in a Word document. As stated above, any assumptions must also be listed at the beginning of the Word document. 1. You have been asked to use Microsoft Project to develop the project schedule. Based on the information in the case study description above, use Microsoft Project 2010 to produce a “Part A1” schedule. Make sure that you: a) Set the start date for the project correctly in project information. b) Use automatic scheduling. c) Include the resource allocation details on the schedule. d) Have the project name (new industrial controller XYZ) as the top of the task list and have all other tasks indented below this heading. e) Include a WBS column before your task list. f) Include a WBS predecessors column after your predecessors column g) Make sure that the holidays described in the “general information” are not included in the available working days for your project. h) Use the Microsoft Project software to make sure that the critical path(s) are automatically highlighted in the Gantt chart view of you schedule. i) Add the system ready milestone at the end of your task list. At this point there may be resource over allocation issues. Do not attempt to resolve these before answering question 2. Save this version of your schedule in XYZControllersPartA1.mpp. You will be required to submit this file as part of your assignment submission. (7 marks) 2. At this point ignore any resource over allocations. Based on the part A1 schedule (and assuming that you have no resource constraints) a) How long would the project take to complete? b) What are the start and finish dates of the project. c) List the tasks that are on the critical path(s) of the project in part A1. If there is more than one critical path, list the tasks on each critical path as a separate list. d) Did the holidays make any difference to the end date of your project? Explain. 3. You are told that you are not to crash activities 1.3.1, 1.3.3. or 1.3.4, but that you are to find ways to reduce the duration of the project by 3 weeks. a) What tasks would you reduce if you were asked to complete the project 3 weeks earlier than your current finish date? Explain what you could do to reduce the duration of the activities you have selected. b) Make a copy of the Part A1 file in a file called XYZControllersPartA1_Shorter.mpp. Apply the changes you have described in part (a) and save the results. This file must also be submitted as part of the assignment. 4. Create another copy of your original XYZControllersPartA1.mpp in file called XYZControllersPartA2.mpp. If there were any resource over-allocation issues resolve these in this new XYZControllersPartA2.mpp file. Note that at this stage you must resolve any resource over-allocation issues without the addition of any additional resources. Save the “modified” version of XYZControllersPartA2.mpp. You will also be required to submit this file as part of your assignment submission. a) How did you/would you resolve any resource over-allocation issues without adding additional resources? Explain in detail what you had to do and how you used any of the Microsoft Project facilities to help. b) In your Word document, list the tasks that are now displayed as “critical”. c) What impact did the resource constraints have on your schedule? (Hint: Have the duration and end date changed and if so, by how much? Has the network sensitivity changed?) d) Explain why the resolution of the resource over-allocation has or has not impacted on your schedule duration and/or network sensitivity. 5. According to your schedule, on what date can the technical writer start work on the documentation? 6. Write a memo to the director of product development, Mr. Product outlining: a) the expected completion date of the project, assuming it commences on 14/7/14 and no additional resources are made available; b) the total duration of the project; c) an explanation of the main factors that cause the project to require that length of time; d) the estimated direct labour cost of the project. Present the costs in a table showing the costs for the following:  hardware  Software  System Integration  Total Assume that you will send the project schedule as an attachment to the memo. (4 marks) 7. Describe what the project manager needs to do to ensure there is a high standard of ethical behaviour among the team members. (2 marks) 8. a) Would you consider using agile project management for this project? Explain why /why not. b) What are the advantages of agile project management? c) What are the disadvantages of agile project management? 9. a) How can you make sure that you effectively capture “lessons learned” during this project so that future projects and project managers can benefit from your experience? b) What recommendations would you give to an organisation to help ensure that they make effective use of “lessons learned” in future projects? 10. Risk Management: a) What will you do to perform effective risk management in this project?
