Assessment Task 1: Research Method Review Important details Due date: Monday 18 April 2016, 10am This task is worth 30% of your final mark. It is to be done individually. Your report should be between 1500- 2500 words. Introduction The aim of this task is to demonstrate your understanding of research methods covered in the unit and how they are used in an area of professional interest to you. The learni ng outcomes covered by this task include: • Describe the practices used in real -world research including legal, commer cial and ethical frameworks. • Describe the characteristic features of real -world research methods and debate their relative merits. • Compare, evaluate and select suitable research methods appropriate to a body of research. The task Imagine that your manager has some budget to undertake some research. He/she has asked you to prepare a report describing current methods in your professional area. You are required to write a report (styled as an internal report for your manager and team, who are IT experts, not experts in doing research ) which includes the following: 1. Description and definition of one or two methods 2. The advantages and disadvantages of the method 3. Which philosophical perspective the method can belong to 4. Considerations with respect to ethics 5. Description of and references to relevant work in your area. As an extension, your report can also include a description of risk, costs, time and/o r special expertise (task 6 ). This will require you to do some further reading and investigation on your own . However, you should only attempt this task after completing tasks 1- 5 – they are more important. Assessment The report will be assessed on the following criteria: Criteria Weighting Details Production and writing 10% Has the report been well - presented and well -written? How do they differ? Advantages and disadvantages 20% Have advantages and disadvantages been identified and described? Philosophical perspective 10% Have the method s been placed with the correct philosophical perspective? Is justification provided? Ethics 10% Have the ethical considerations that apply to these methods been described? How would you go about ensuring the research is per formed ethically? Example applications 2 0% Provide a description of one or two applications of this method in an area of interest to you. Costs, time and /or expertise (extension) 20% Considerations in terms of risk, expenses, time and /or expertise required are described and discussed. Submission The report should be submitted to TurnItin via the appropriate link in Blackboard. Note that Blackboard and TurnItIn sometimes have outages beyond our control, so it is wise not to leave submission to the last minute – you can overwrite previous submissions. FAQ Can I do surveys for the method review? You can do any method that we cover in the unit, but it will be more interesting if you select one that relates to your studies. Surveys are pretty generic though. Should I make up an example for the relevant work section? The expectation is that you read some papers and describe a study/studies already done. Are focus groups a method? No.
