The Assessment Task
The task of this assessment is to write an article on a technical subject that is suitable for publication in a magazine that can be read by a non-technical audience. Such an article should be interesting and engage the reader. Therefore you have to consider how to make your article attractive and encourage someone to read it. You may assume that the reader has the same general background knowledge as you, but no specialist technical knowledge about the subject which the article is covering. It is therefore important that you avoid technical jargon and acronyms and ensure that the topic is described in a manner that can be understood. You must not therefore assume that the reader knows about the subject. Equally, you don’t want to patronise them. Getting this balance right is therefore an important part of the assignment. If you choose in include diagrams/images then these need to be relevant and add value to the article. Diagrams must be easy to understand and be fully explained. Images should be used to highlight something you are describing within the article and not included to simply make your article look pretty.
Each student has been assigned a different topic area for this assignment. Allocations are in a separate document.
You should aim to make your article as engaging and as informative as possible, while bearing in mind your audience and the maximum allowed size. It is most important that it provides a technical education of the learner: it must therefore have substantial technical content that explains how a particular piece of technology works and how it impacts society. Your article must have a clear and logical structure that has a beginning, middle and end that tells a coherent story. Therefore you need to decide on the key points that you article will address and ensure that these are properly covered in your article. Having read your article the reader should not be left wondering what its purpose or key point was.
