This involves researching the issue and then writing an individual outline draft of this first section of 800 words which sets out and debates the main issues related to your topic. Some suggested contemporary issues that you could base your work on are detailed below.

1. HRM Challenges in cross border mergers and acquisitions
You could for example examine the strategic options and challenges in the transfer of employment practices across borders in multinationals.
2. Strategic challenges for Recruitment and Selection in multinationals.
You could consider the appropriateness and problems of different recruitment and selection methods in international organisations and for international managers, assessing the validity and reliability of these different techniques
3. Managing Global reward strategies and practices
One possible area you could focus on for example is to discuss the proposition that a global policy on rewards is desirable for transnational/geocentric organisations.
4. Management development and Competencies for global managers.
A possible topic might be to discuss the strategic importance of behavioural competencies for international managers in multi-national companies and the challenges that this presents when operating across national borders.
3. Performance management strategies for international managers
You could discuss the challenges of introducing and operating an effective performance management system for international managers working in multinational organisations
6. Managing Social Responsibility through International HRM Strategy and Practices
You could critically reflect on how firms in practice integrate social responsibility into their international operations and the role of the HRM function.
7. Global Work Life Management
You could for example examine how firms manage expatriates and their repatriation. What are the key challenges and opportunities here.
Structure of the Draft
It will be helpful to develop critical reflection around the topic demonstrating a good understanding of the current literature and debates on the topic. Papers should discuss strategic recommendations for firms based on your understanding and evaluation of the literature.
The structure for the Draft Assignment is as follows:
1. Working Title of the Contemporary HR Issue being researched
2. Rationale for the chosen issue
One paragraph. Place your work in the context of previous literature (see point five) on the topic here.
3. Some key areas/ debates/ questions you are addressing
4. Outline Structure
5. Key academic references
6. Seven to ten literature references:
Provide reference list, using the Harvard referencing system (see the Appendix). Check the module reading lists for a starting point and guide here. You are encouraged to read relevant recent journal articles as well as the recommended text books on the topic.
