1.Identify and apply the basic concepts of the sciences relating to the human body and its physiological systems

2.Identify the nature of micro-organisms and their role in human health  

3.Identify macronutrients and micronutrients and elements of nutrition and explain how they contribute to human health

 

The assignment involves comparing the diet of a “real” person living in Aotearoa/New Zealand to guidelines; it is not about achieving an ideal diet.  The authenticity of your record opens up ways to answer the questions, and gives insight into the nutrition issues of the family/ whānau and wider community.

The information you submit will be kept private and will not be shared with the class.

1.Keep a “food diary” for your typical 24 hour day. Choose a day without unusual events (travel, double shift etc), and recognise that making this food record will take time and effort on that day.

2.Record the type of food, and the amount (e.g. breakfast: 2x weetbix biscuits; ½ cup lite blue milk, remember the extra bits such as that heaped teaspoon sugar). It is important that an hour-by-hour record be made as food intake tends to be remembered poorly. Using a phone camera to capture your foods and the amount is acceptable.

3.Enter your food diary into a programme that will analyse the data. The programme will need to supply the mass (g, mg, mcg) of the nutrients in the day’s intake. Examples of programmes you could use include:

SECTION ONE: COMPARISON OF INTAKE AGAINST RECOMMENDED GUIDELINES 

1a) With reference to the “Summary of Eating and Activity Guidelines for New Zealand Adults”. Discuss how your general eating and activity level compares to these guidelines. Include ways you meet the guidelines and possible improvements you could make to improve on your current eating and activity levels.  

1b) Find a “recommended servings” image (such as a food pyramid) that culturally aligns with your diet.  Discuss how your food intake (for the day of analysis) compares with this pyramid and provide two recommendations that would help your intake align with the image provided.
