As part of the formal assessment for the HNC/D programme you are required to submit an assignment for each module. Please refer to your Student Handbook for full details of the programme assessment scheme and general information on preparing and submitting assignments. After completing the module you should be able to: 1. Understand the impact of WAN technologies 2. Design WAN infrastructures 3. Implement WAN infrastructures 4. Manage WAN infrastructures Completing the assignment tasks will demonstrate your ability to do these things. Specifically, each part of each task corresponds to the relevant assessment criterion given at the end of this specification. E.g. task 1 part 1 corresponds with Assessment Criterion 1.1. Scenario In the UK, the majority of medical services (doctors, hospitals etc.) are provided by the National Health Service (NHS) which is funded out of taxes. Within each geographical area the hospital service is provided by one or more main hospitals with some outlying clinics offering either specialist treatments or local services in remote communities. Like most government run services, the NHS undergoes regular re-organisations, mostly driven by political rather than medical needs. The town of Oban on the west coast of Scotland has one such main hospital and is the centre for a number of local clinics in this remote and sparsely populated area. As a result of a local reorganisation, the local hospital in Salen on the Isle of Mull is being brought under the control of Oban Hospital. This is a small “cottage” hospital with a total of only 8 beds plus an outpatient service and a travelling doctor. It provides all medical services on the Isle of Mull. Anyone that is too seriously ill to be treated at Salen is transferred to Oban. The local hospital at Salen has until now run its own IT services and network with Internet connection but they are now to come under the main IT Services provision at Oban hospital. Unfortunately, the Salen hospital has been using different technologies from the Oban hospital in many areas of IT. This assignment is about the differences between these technologies and how the Salen hospital might be better integrated into the main hospital systems run at Oban hospital. Note: All the places mentioned in this scenario are real. You can find them by using any on-line mapping service. www.streetmap.co.uk is recommended as it provides detailed maps of the UK with hospitals clearly marked. The hospital at Salen is here: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=157410&y=742815&z=120&sv=157410,742815&st=4&ar=y& mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=863&ax=157410&ay=742815&lm=0 and the one in Oban is here: Page 3 of 9 http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=185710&y=728610&z=120&sv=185710,728610&st=4&ar=y& mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=863&ax=185710&ay=728610&lm=0 The nearest Internet Point of Presence where a connection can be made is at Connel, which can be found here: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=191500&y=734440&z=126&sv=191500,734440&st=4&ar=y& mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=802&ax=191500&ay=734440&lm=0 Note: Although the places are real, the rest of the scenario is not. You must use the information provided in this assignment specification to answer the questions. If anything you find out about the real hospitals is different from that presented here, then you must use the information presented here. Reality has been changed to provide a suitable scenario for the assignment. In particular, DO NOT contact either of the hospitals. They have more important things to do than answer student questions. If you have any questions about this assignment, contact the tutor.Task 1 – Guideline length 800 words Salen Hospital currently connects to the Internet via an ADSL. This was installed as part of a project sponsored by the Scottish Parliament to provide Internet access to the entire island, under which the entire telephone system on the island was upgraded to provide every home and business with a broadband connection. However, this connection will not provide sufficient performance for the requirements of Oban Hospital. Identify ONE wide area network technology that would be suitable for Salen Hospital to connect to the Internet. Explain how this differs from the ADSL currently used and how the hospital will benefit. You should discuss: 1.1 in detail the key technical differences between ADSL and your chosen replacement technology. 1.2 in detail the types of traffic that the hospital might expect on the WAN link that would require the new connection. 1.3 an outline of how the hospital can ensure that their services are protected from malicious interference via the Internet. 1.4 an outline of ONE method that Salen Hospital and Oban Hospital can employ to ensure that confidential communications are not compromised when being relayed on the Internet.
