Katia is a waitress aged in her 20s who comes into the Alcohol and other Drugs service center in Darlinghurst Sydney seeking help. This is the first time Katia has been to the service and Angie start to take down the client’s history . Katia tells Angie that she has been using crystal methamphetamine for the past six months but has used other drugs every now and then but now it's mostly crystal methamphetamine.

Katia's crystal methamphetamine use has recently escalated and she has been using every day for the past 2 weeks.

Katia tells Angie that she has not slept or eaten much during the last 2 weeks and has only turned up for work twice. She says she is struggling to function at work and has had many ‘cautions’ issued by her boss about her work ethics and workplace behavior. Katia says “I know I am going lose my job”,

"I don't know who I am or what I am doing anymore".

Katia tells Angie she is feeling overwhelmed and can't cope ..."l got so desperate last night that I tried to cut my wrists" “but I didn’t do it right”, She shows Angie the cuts on her wrists and says "Now I know how to do the job properly”.

Katia jumps up and grabs a photo frame off the wall, smashes the glass in the frame and uses one of the shards of glass to slit her left wrist. Angie is shocked at the speed to which this incident occurred but tries to speak calmly to Katia and administers first aid by putting Katia’s right hand on her bleeding wrist until she can apply a glove and apply pressure on Katia’s left wrist to stop the bleeding, then calls for assistance to send for emergency services.
