Describe The Abiotic Factors Of An Ecosystem: State Some Appropriate Examples

Referencing Styles : APA | Pages : 1

Definition of Ecosystem

The working together of living and non-living thing in a community is known as the ecosystem. An ecosystem can be categorized in to two parts according to the factors of the ecosystem, which are the biotic factors and the other one is the abiotic factor.

What are biotic and abiotic factors?

The living organisms of an ecosystem are known as the biotic factors for the ecosystem, and the non-living things of the ecosystem are known as the abiotic factors. The abiotic factors are responsible for the growing and carrying out of the different activities by the living organisms. Some examples of the abiotic factors are light, soil, wind, temperature, water, gases and physiographic factors.

Light factor

The sunlight is the main source of the light energy for almost all the ecosystems. The light energy is used by the green plants that contain chlorophyll, during the process of photosynthesis. In the process of photosynthesis, organic substances are manufactured by the plants by using the inorganic substances. Light is a very important abiotic factor because the visible light is used in the process of photosynthesis. The important factors of light like the quality of light, intensity and the length of the light also play an important role in the ecosystem.

Quality of the light (colour or the wavelength)

In the process of photosynthesis the plants absorb red and blue light. The quality of light is similar for almost every terrestrial ecosystem. The red and blue light do not penetrate the water because they are absorbed by the plants, but there are some algae which contain additional pigments that can absorb other colours.

Intensity of light

The latitudes impact the intensity of the light and also the season change accounts for the intensity of light.

Length of the day

There are certain plants that bloom only in a certain time of the year and this is because these plants can measure the length of the night. Photoperiodism is the term that is used to describe the phenomenon in which the plants react with the day light.

Phototropism

The term Phototropism is used to indicate the directional growth of plants that respond to the light and the light simulates the direction of the movement of the plant stems. This means that the stems tend to follow the direction of the light for the process of phototropism.

Phototaxis

This process is the movement of the whole organism in the direction of the light. Photokinesis is the process of movement of animals that is dependent on the light intensity and not the direction.

Temperature factor

The temperature plays an important factor as for different locations there are different temperatures. One region can be warm and another can be cold. This temperature variation highly affects the ecosystem of that region. One example can be the opening and closing of plants according to day and night and the reason behind that is the difference between the temperatures. Another example can be the fruit peach that requires a cold climate in order to blossom in the spring each year.

Water factor

The habitats of plants and animals vary from aquatic environment to dry deserts. Water is an important factor that is required by every living organism on this earth in order to survive. The plants can be categorized into three groups: The Hydrophytes, Mesophytes and the Xerophytes.

The Hydrophytes

The plants that grow in the water are known as Hydrophytes. One examples of the hydrophytes can be water lilies.

The Mesophytes

The plants that can grow with average amount of water are known as the Mesophytes and examples can be roses and sweetpeas.

The Xerophytes

The plants that can grow in dry environments and can experience shortage of water are known as Xerophytes. One example can be Cactus.

In order to survive without water the plants have some adaptive measure that helps them in the process. The reserved stomatal rhythms, sunken stomata and absence of leaves are some of the adaptive features.

The factor atmospheric gases

The gases are very important for any living organisms to survive. The three main gases that are used by the animals and plants are the oxygen, carbon dioxide and the nitrogen.

Oxygen is used by every living organisms during the process of respiration and it is mainly produced by the plants in the process of photosynthesis. The carbon dioxide gas is used by the plants in the process of photosynthesis which is being created by humans in the process of respiration. The Nitrogen gas is made available to the plants by some bacteria and through the actions of lightning.

Wind factor

The wind factor or the air currents ascend on a world wide scale which results in a complex interaction between the hot air that is expanding and rising, and this takes place in the mid-latitudes. The wind is affected by the rotation of the earth and results in the centrifugal force that lifts the air at the equator region. The name of the force is known as Coriolis force and it tends to deflect the winds to the left in the direction of the southern hemisphere and then to the right in the northern hemisphere. Water vapour is carried by the winds that condense and form the rain and snow. In the process of pollination and dispersion of seeds the winds plays a vital role as it acts like a carrier. Wind erosion can eradicate and restructure topsoil, and it is prominent in the areas where the vegetation is less. In areas of strong winds the plants are smaller than in the less windy regions.

The soil factors also known as edaphic factors

The factors that affect the soil are the soil texture, soil air, and temperature of the soil, solution of the soil and the pH of the soil.

Another factor can be the physiographic factor that is associated with the physical nature of a particular area.
