Academic Language & Learning Success Program Academic Language & Learning Success Program The ALLSP team is here to give academic support to CDU's higher education students, internal and external, undergraduate and post graduate. Our aim is to help students develop their academic language and literacy skills, and positively affect the retention rate and satisfaction of students. What academic support services do we offer? Study Skills Workshops (on campus & online) We run over 20 different study skills workshop over each semester. We conduct these workshops on campus at Casuarina and the same workshops are conducted online on Collaborate for external students and those who cannot make the on campus workshops earlier that day. Students can attend as many workshops as they wish. If requested Weekly clinics (on campus & online) Our clinics (writing; editing and proofreading; oral presentation) are conducted weekly. Students are encouraged to bring a paragraph of their work to these sessions and apply what they learn in the sessions to that work. Students can also do their presentations in the oral presentations workshop in order to get feedback before they have to present elsewhere. Individual consultations (face-to-face, phone & Skype) Before seeking an individual consultation, we encourage students to attend at least one ALLSP workshop (not mandatory) that concentrates on the academic skill they wish to learn about and improve on before seeking appointments for individual assistance. Appointments can be made online for phone, Skype or face-to-face consultations. Consultations are 50 minutes long and aim to address the student’s specific academic needs. Student requested workshops (on campus & online) Students are able to request a workshop, online or on campus, provided that there is a minimum of three students who will attend. The workshop is tailored to the students’ request and needs. For example, a group of 6 nursing students requested a workshop on report writing with a particular focus on an assignment. After-hours consultations (face-to-face, phone & Skype) The after-hours service extends our services until 9.30pm on weekdays and 12.00-5.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays. It is primarily for external student use. After-hours service is solely for individual consultations. Consultations are 50 minutes long and require an appointment. Drop-in service (face-to-face, phone & Skype) Up to 20-minute consultations are offered without an appointment at the ‘drop-in centre’ located in the CDU library. Online resources The Study Skills website provides a comprehensive range of study skills information to enable students to gain an appreciation of the academic skills required at university. The website includes short (5-minute) study skills videos and interactive activities developed by ALLSP with the assistance of the multimedia team in the Office of Learning and Teaching. Study skills videos and interactive activities are continually being developed and added to the website for student use.
