Assessment 1 - Online Quizzes A& B
Weight: 5% for quiz A and 15% for quiz BDue date: Weeks 3 for quiz A and week 11 for quiz B (The test will open at midday on the Friday of the week due and close on the following Friday)
Question type: Multiple choice and/or true/false
Number of questions: 15 for quiz A and 20 for quiz B
Duration: 20 minutes for quiz A and 40 minutes for quiz B
Students will only have one attempt and are responsible for ensuring they have internet access at the time of the quiz.
Context and instructions for Assessment 2 – Journal article evaluation
Topic: Students are to conduct a literature search, select TWO articles and provide summary of articles
Referencing: APA style of referencing should be followed
The articles must be:
Selected from peer reviewed journals
Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) (in humans) with results (ie no Protocols of RCTs to be selected)
In your field of healthcare (specific modality, if applicable)
Discussion board activity
Once you have selected two articles, please create a thread in ‘Assessment 2 – Journal article evaluation’ forum, on the discussion board and post the abstracts of the two selected articles by 11:55pm AEDT/AEST Sunday of week 3. If there is an error in the choice of your articles for assessment 2, your lecturer will contact you by 11:55 pm AEDT/AEST on Wednesday of week 4. This activity is not graded. The student is responsible for posting abstracts by Sunday of week 3 if they would like to check with their lecturer. The lecturer will not comment on the choice of articles posted after Sunday of week 3. Please do not post your final assessment 2 submission on the discussion board. Assessment 2 has to be submitted in the assessment area on Blackboard.
Students are to submit articles for review with a brief identification and description of the key elements in each article that classify it as a Randomized Controlled Trial. The two selected articles have to be summarized using the following headings:
1. Population of Interest
2. Inclusion & exclusion criteria
3. Sampling Method
4. Sample size
5. Allocation Method
6. Treatment and Control Groups
7. Type of blinding
8. Overall study outcomes
Each article must be separately and succinctly summarized. Since the aim of this assessment is to identify the main characteristics of each selected RCT, the summary of each article should be brief. One of the following formats should be selected:

Assessment 3 – Complete critical analysis and evaluation of journal article
Topic: Students are required to conduct a complete analysis and evaluation of one of the two journal articles selected in Assessment 2. Students are required to critically appraise the selected article according to the following headings in an essay format. Please note that the sections within the sub-headings are guidelines only and are not intended to be answered in a question answer format.
The paper should be introduced with appropriate referencing and a discussion on the reason why you chose the article should be included. For Example: In this paper the article entitled “The therapeutic use of Drug X” by Smith et al.,
2012 will be critically appraised. This article investigates.....
