Cesare Borgia was an Italian condottiero (military leader), noblemen, cardinal with Aragonese. He had the title of Duke of Valentinois. He was regarded as one of the illegitimate sons of Pope Alexander VI. Cesare Borgia was elected to be a cardinal and was given the post of Archbishop of Valencia while he was in his teens. Cesare was ambitious, power hungry and ruthless. Cesare in 1496 was put in command of the papal army while he was still in his twenties. It was during the 19th century when Italy was finally united and Cesare Borgia was regarded as a forerunner for this unity. It was during this time that, Cesare was arrested and was exiled to Spain in a prison from where he later escaped. He took up the service of his brother-in-law, King John of Navarre. At this time, there was a rebellion going on in Spain and Cesare took command of 5000 army men to deal with the rebellion on behalf of his brother-in-law. In order to curb the rebellion Cesare Borgia laid siege to the Castle of Viana which was one of the rebels and belonged to Luis de Beaumonte. It was during the time of this siege that Cesare Borgia was killed by men of Luis de Beaumonte. The attackers did not realize who Cesare was and considered him to be a normal horseman and thereby killed him brutally leaving twenty-five wound marks over his body. Cesare Borgia was buried in a little parish church of Viana by King John.
