Assessment Task 1: Essay For this assignment you must write an essay in order to demonstrate your understanding of theory and research relating to the link between HRM and performance. You can choose from two essay topics. If you choose Topic 1, you must write a persuasive essay and use theory and research to make the case that investment in HRM does indeed have positive effects on organisational performance. In other words, you must take an affirmative, ‘glass half full’ stance. If you choose Topic 2, you must write a critical and analytical essay in which you critically evaluate the research evidence on the HRM-performance link. That is to say, , you must adopt a dissenting, ‘glass half empty’ stance. In both of these essay topics, the implications of the analysis for professional practice must also be discussed. You must complete this assignment on your own, it is not a group assignment. For instance, if an organisation is performing well, then any number of factors, aside from the way in which people are managed, could be influential. Equally, causality could be reversed. In other words, it may be the case that high levels of organisational performance could enable an organisation to put in place sophisticated approaches to managing people. Task: Draw on (1) theoretical frameworks that are used to explain the HRM-performance link and (2) empirical evidence from studies conducted in a range of national contexts and diverse organisational settings to make the case that investment in HRM does indeed have positive effects on organisational performance. Outline implications of your analysis for professional practice. OR Topic 2: Introduction: A great deal of research has been conducted to find out how HRM impacts on organisational performance. A large number of these studies have concluded that there is a link between the two. However, commentators have also argued that we need to be cautious in asserting that this link exists. Task: Critically evaluate the research evidence on the HRM-performance link. Use studies conducted in a range of national contexts and diverse organisational settings to illustrate the complexities and difficulties involved in providing conclusive proof on the HRM-performance link. Outline implications of your analysis for professional practice. Your essay must: show evidence of wide-ranging research; present robust arguments; flow smoothly in terms of the points you make; be written in a clear fashion; and adhere to APA referencing guidelines.
