Literature review Task Integrative: Literature review Learning Outcomes Assessed: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 Aim: The aim of this task is to enable you to Deepen your understanding of the philosophy and principles of PMC and their application to practice; Enhance your literature search, retrieval, review and critique skills and To provide you with potential publishing opportunities. For this task you will write a 3000 word integrative literature review. An integrative literature review uses a systematic process to find relevant evidence to answer a specific targeted question. In order to more fully understand the topic under investigation this method enables you to combine the evidence that can come from Randomised Controlled Trials , observational studies, qualitative research, clinical experts, and other types of evidence (Torraco, 2005; Whittemore & Knafl, 2005). Task rationale: Providing a framework for you to target your approach to reviewing the literature will enable you to focus on the relevant literature and gain a deeper understanding and perspective on the topic you choose to investigate. The integrative review method is commonly used within nursing and midwifery publications therefore this task provides you with the skills required to structure, organise and report on the literature with a view to submitting your work for publication. Task Description: Choose ONE of the following 5 questions as the basis for your review What strategies can be implemented to promote and achieve respectful and reciprocal interdisciplinary collaboration in the provision of primary maternity care? How can we identify and meet the maternity care needs of an Aboriginal /Torres Strait islander woman to ensure the care she receives is evidence informed and respectful? There is increasing evidence that continuity of care provided by a midwife within a primary maternity care framework leads to enhanced outcomes for the woman and her baby. What factors contribute to the provision of sustainable primary maternity care services? Birth has been described as “a risky business”, how do differing definitions of “risk” impact on the provision of primary maternity care services? Why caseload midwifery (a woman supported by one primary midwife, backed up by a maximum of two additional known primary midwives) is preferable to team midwifery models: an integrative literature review. Please contact the course convenor early if you are having difficulty selecting your question How to Guide: The integrative literature review method requires the use of a systematic process. The following papers written by Kable et al.(2012), Torracco (2005) and Whittemore and Knafl (2005) will provide a useful background and summary to the processes required for this task. You will see that many of the published “integrative literature reviews “cite one of these papers when describing the process they used. The following 5 step guide to completing your review guide is based on the advice offered by these authors. Step 1. Problem Identification A clear problem identification and review purpose are essential to provide focus and boundaries for the integrative literature review process (Whittemore & Knafl, 2005). It is important to clearly define the area of investigation to be covered by your literature review and to determine the purpose. The background and introduction of your paper should therefore introduce the topic and justify why it is important to search the literature to answer the question. When you choose your question you will need to set clear boundaries on which variables you will include and exclude as this will then inform step 2. Step 2. Literature search Well-defined literature search strategies are essential to ensure that you are able to look examine the question from many different angles. Your search should follow a clearly organised process and that process should be documented and clearly demonstrate why the papers chosen for the review were included. Ideally within an integrative review, all of the relevant literature on the problem or topic of interest is accessed including the “grey” literature which includes for example, government and organisational reports. Step 3. Data evaluation Evaluating the quality of the primary sources used in an integrative review is an important step to add strength to the findings generated by the review. It is important therefore to use a quality assessment framework to determine whether the source should be included in the final review and also to justify why it was included. The results of the quality evaluation should be recorded along with other descriptive details of each paper within a summary table which should be included as an appendix to your paper. (NB this summary table is not included within your 3000 word count). You can view an example of a well-constructed summary table used by a previous student here. Step 4. Data analysis Within this section the papers are reviewed using a process of analysis and interpretation. It is important to approach the analysis in a systematic and constructive way. This could begin by reducing the data into manageable chunks through the creation of a simple classification system; for example you may sort the sources for review into groups defined by the research framework used such as qualitative, quantitative or mixed method research and/or the sampling methods used. Compare and contrast the findings within each category you have sorted them into, look for themes and patterns within the clusters, and then look for common themes across the whole sample. Step 5. Data interpretation and presentation The final stage of the review is to present your interpretation of the common themes identified across the sources reviewed. Within this section you would identify and discuss the limitations of the review process. This will create an overall discussion from which you will draw conclusions to inform practice and make recommendations for future research. Preparing your assignment for submission Please submit as one combined word document Remember to add your summary table of papers reviewed
