Condensation is referred to as the change of the physical state of matter from the gaseous phase into the liquid phase and is also the reverse process of vaporization. The term ‘condensation’ most often refers to the process of water cycle. Condensation can also be defined as the process of change in the state of water vapor to liquid water when it comes in contact with a liquid or a solid surface or cloud condensation nuclei present in the atmosphere. When the transition process takes place from the gaseous state into the solid state directly, the change is referred to as deposition.
The most common example of Condensation is the phenomena of water cycle. Condensation in the process of water cycle is responsible for the formation of clouds. Clouds after being formed comes down as rain upon the earth. This change of phase between solid, liquid and gas is all because of the movement of the water molecules. In vapor state, the water molecules are arranged in a random manner compared to the liquid state. As the condensation takes place, the water molecules become more organized and as a result of this, heat is released into the atmosphere resulting in a change of phase from the vapor phase to the liquid phase. This process generally takes place when the warm air rises up and cools down.
Like all the states of matter which exists, even water consists of molecules. In the vapor form, the water molecules are energetic, fast moving and placed far apart from each other. As the vapor gets into cooler temperatures, the molecules become slow moving, a lot less energetic and move a lot closer to each other. When the molecules reach a threshold in the level of energy, the vapor phase changes into the liquid phase.
There are few examples regarding the process of condensation in our daily life which don’t have a great significance, but can be considered.
1.Morning dew occurs on the surface of the grass and the leaves due to the condensation of moisture which is cooled during the night.
2.Little droplets on the surface of the soda can which is visible due to the reason that the moisture in the air gets condensed in contact with the cold surface of the soda can.
3.A foggy windshield which occurs due to the reason that inside the vehicle, the passengers breathe out hot air which when comes in contact with the cold windshield gets condensed.
4.A layer of fog even occurs on the mirror of the washroom where the warm breathe out air gets condensed on coming in contact with the cold mirror.
5.In a region where its cold outside, the breath can be seen since the moisture condenses into larger droplets. This is also an example of condensation occurring which does not have the necessity of a surface to catalyze the process of condensation.
6.The formation of clouds up in the sky is also an example of the process of condensation without the presence of an actual surface.
