What Are Demonstrative Pronouns and Their Usage With The Help Of Various Examples?

Referencing Styles : APA | Pages : 1

Demonstrative pronouns are considered as a major type of pronoun, which points to a specific object or person. The inclusion of this pronoun in a sentence can refer to space or time. This type of pronoun can be singular or plural. At the time of representing the thing or things, the demonstrating pronoun can be near or far from the time. The instances of such situation are as follows:

  • Near in time or distance: this, these
  • Far in time or distance: that, those

The reason behind such usage is that, there is very limited number of demonstrative pronoun in the English language. Thus, it is imperative to use properly. There are some of the basic rules of using this demonstrative pronoun. You should remember the rules in order to avoid facing any kind of difficulty in the way of understanding interesting parts of speech. Basic rules of using this demonstrative pronoun are discussed below:

  • Identifying noun is one of the major characteristics of demonstrative pronoun, whether the nouns are placed specifically or not. For instance, “I can’t rely on this “or “we are not aware about what this is”, in both of the sentences, “this” refer to something, which the writer don’t know.
  • Demonstrative pronoun is used generally in order to describe animals, places, or things. In addition to that, demonstrative pronoun can also be used in terms of identifying the people, when they are identified.
  • Demonstrative pronoun can be integrated in the place of the nouns, which can be assessed in the context of pronoun.

There are some of the significant instances of demonstrative pronoun, which are as follows: In these sentences, the bold words are demonstrative pronoun.

  • Neither of the cows can be hided.
  • Such was her understanding on the history of English literature.
  • This was the bangle of my mother.
  • That looks like the car I used to drive.
  • These shoes are nice but uncomfortable.

There are some of the demonstrative pronouns which are used in the English language in terms of demonstrating the adjective. The demonstrative pronoun always takes place of the noun phrase, while the demonstrative objectives modify the noun and replace it as required. Some examples of the demonstrative pronoun are discussed below, which are taking the place of noun phrase.

  • “The food you're cooking is testy” can be represented as “That food is tasty.”
  • “The cockroaches currently giving birth under our kitchen sink are totally gross” can be written as “Those are totally gross.”
  • “The pretzel-like yoga move we're doing really hurts” can be written as “This really hurts.”
  • “The cakes in my plate are my favorite” can be represented as “These are my favorites.”

The time, when you are using the demonstrative pronoun, you should indicate the thing, about which you are talking about. You can also point the objective by gesturing the word.
“These” and “those” are the vital demonstrative pronoun. While using the demonstrative pronoun, you should also look after the nouns. This is the reason, for which demonstrative pronoun is being widely used in the spoken English. On the other hand, demonstrative pronoun is also being used widely in the written English, if the context clarifies the noun, which is being referred by the demonstrative pronoun. For instance,

  • “Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, brown paper packages tied up with strings - these are a few of my favorite things.”

Demonstrative pronoun is also being used in order to describe a situation, object or a thing. The terms "this" or "that" are the major words, through which such description can be carried out. The instance is as follows:

  • “They make you wear rented shoes, you always smell bad when you leave, my thumb nail always breaks off, and I'm not good at it. That is why I hate bowling.”

At the same time, the demonstrative pronouns play a critical role in replace specific people or things, which have been mentioned earlier in the context. This tells us about the whether or not it is replacing something singular or plural. The usage of demonstrative pronoun in different context is as follows:

The term “this” represents something, which is very close to object. For instance,

  • This is very smelly.

“That” presents something, which is father away. For example,

  • You can smell that from here.

“These” present something, which is very close to the object. For instance,

  • These smell rotten.

On the other hand, “those” represents some situation, which is far away from the objects. For instance,

  • Do not paint those.

The difference in between the demonstrative pronoun and demonstrative objective is needed to be considered in this context. While the demonstrative pronoun replaces the noun, demonstrative adjectives play a critical role in terms of modifying the noun and make a sentence clear and precise. However, such demonstrative adjectives cannot ac as the noun. Some of the instances of demonstrative adjectives are as follows:

  • Do not paint those fences
  • You smell that petrol pump from here.
  • This soup is very smelly.

You can use a quick example in order to illustrate the demonstrative pronoun further. For instance, “This is my house”- is one of the major examples which need to be considered in this context. In this sentence, house is the noun, which is being pointed by the word “thus.” Therefore, here “this” is the demonstrative pronoun. There is just limited number of demonstrative pronoun in the English language. “This and that” are two of the major demonstrative pronoun presenting the singular objects. On the other hand, “these and those” are two of the major plural demonstrative pronoun. The usage of singular demonstrative pronoun is as follows:

  • This food tastes excellent.
  • This is really ridiculous.
  • That house belongs to David.

The instances of plural demonstrative pronouns are also presented below:

  • These are the only good pens I have.
  • These apples smell rotten.
  • Those were the golden times in my life.
  • Those boys secured “A” grade.

While using demonstrative pronoun, you should be highly aware, as it can also be used as the noun, which can come before the noun in order to, express the noun. It is the function of pronoun to replace the noun.  Thus, if you see a word in front of the noun, it is most likely to be an adjective. A list of examples using both singular and plural demonstrative pronoun is as follows:

  • This milkshake is too much yummy.
  • I would like those flower.
  • I am not sure that how the boy will do it.
  • This is really crazy.
  • These are the coziest pillows.
  • That is really heavy.
  • That book is not mine.
  • Bring me those roses.
  • I got this presence from my elder brother.
  • These mangoes are rotten.
  • Darjeeling tea is far better than that of the Assam tea.

In order to choose the appropriate demonstrative pronoun, it is imperative to understand whether the noun, which is to be replaced, is singular or plural, common or proper, common or proper and near or far. Demonstrative pronoun is basically defined as the demonstrative word, which grabs the place of a noun a noun phrase as well as the sequence of a noun phrase or a situation, which can be used in both written and spoken English. It is imperative to note in this context that demonstrative pronoun can only be used in at the time, when they are preceded with an antecedent. Just like any other forms of pronoun, the demonstrative pronoun should also agree the verbk which is the key of making a sentence grammatically correct.
