Female Gametes

Gametes are defined as the reproductive cells of organisms. Gametes are also referred to as sex cells.  Female gametes are known as ova or egg cells while male gametes are known as sperms.  Female gametes are haploid cells when fused during sexual reproduction with the male gametes that is the sperm, forms a zygote. The female gamete is considered to be a haploid one because only half of it is chromosomes. When it gets fused with the male gametes of another haploid cell, their chromosome comes together to complete the set, resulting in the formation of diploid zygote having a full set of chromosomes.

Formation of Female Gametes:

Gametes are the products of a special type of cellular reproduction called as meiosis. Meiosis is one of a special kind as the number of chromosomes results from it. During the reproduction of normal cell, that is mitosis, the resulting cells have the same number of chromosomes as that of the original cells. In meiosis, the resulting cell only has half of the original number of chromosomes. Except this there are a lot of phases and processes that occur during meiosis of which meiosis I and meiosis II are the two phases. At the end of meiosis I, the two cells results with a full set of chromosomes. This cell again goes under process of duplicating and splitting resulting in cells having half the number of chromosomes. These resulting cells of meiosis are known as gametes.
