Reflective Writing

A reflective essay is an exploration of a topic using personal thought and experience. By using the topic at hand as a springboard, a writer can reflect on the project and emotional experience or objective fact. The goal of the reflective essay is ultimately to weave together reflections in a way that conveys a new thought to the reader. Reflection is looking into a mirror. The first thing you probably see is yourself looking back at you. Keep looking through and you’ll also see what’s behind you. Writing a reflective essay is similar to looking into a mirror except that instead of seeing objects reflected in the room behind you, you “see” reflections of a past experience. Reflective essays are usually written at the completion of a milestone. For instance, a scientist may write a reflective essay at the completion of an experiment or a student may be asked to write a reflective essay at the end of a course of study or the completion of an individual or class project.

Reflective Essay Writing

Reflective essay writing is used when you are involved in a project and you need to assess and reflect upon your role in initiating and completing the project. Such an evaluation is expected of you when you complete a project and that is where your reflective essay writing skills come in to use.

The reflective essay should have an introduction, the body paragraphs and the conclusion. The introduction should be used to provide an overview of the project background, your role in it and the reasons which prompted you to choose the particular project.

The body paragraphs of the reflective essay should be used to explain the process which you underwent in performing the project objectives. A cohesive, step by step explaining from initiation of project to finishing of the project will give a clear understanding of the project. Your reflective essay will need to include positive and negative outcomes and experiences as well as the strengths and weaknesses. You need to highlight your experiences in terms of dealing with others when performing the project tasks. The progress you achieved through the completion of the project should be assessed by identifying key learning points and expansion of knowledge.

Task 1

The conclusion of the reflective essay should address:

• Whether you achieve your aims

• What you would like to change if you were to repeat the process

• What were the key learning outcomes

• Will and how you would apply the gained knowledge in future work

• How will you propose to make improvements

In a reflective essay, you are expected to carry out your reflections, professionally, and objectively and write the reflective essay with appropriate vocabulary, and suitable writing style.

 Reinforce your learning, make you think about what you know and don’t know. To put it simply what I still need to study for my exams. Reflections can and should be used to document and annotate important pieces of information read, heard, or otherwise discovered and students should relate topics to one another, find connections from lessons to life and work, and tie things together.

Writing reflective essays provide a platform to reflect on subject matter and the way it is handled, both in terms of content and process, what is are relevant and important.  The very acts of thinking, writing, and reviewing stimulate learning.  Questions will arise, insights will spring forth, and connections will be made.

Reflections Are a Vehicle of Communication

Here are some questions that might help get you started in preparing for your reflective essay:

What are some of the important “take away” (things you would really want to remember or may have immediate of future use for)?

How has your view of work and workers, leaders and managers changed?

What are some things you understand more fully now?

What are some of the skills, knowledge, or attitudes that you believe you need to develop further, change, or improve upon?

What surprised you, or challenged your thinking?  Where are you now in relation to this?

Where are you seeing in real life the concepts, principles, or tools covered this semester or the events, practices, objectives, values, people, or efforts introduced in the case?

Is there anything you found hard to believe in the course or about the case?  If so, what is it, and why do you find it hard to believe?

Have you noticed any changes in your own behavior and attitudes?  For example, in your interactions with others? –your reactions to ideas or people? –your approach to study or work?

What are you more conscious of today than you were three or four months ago?

What have you come to appreciate differently or more fully?

Can you say you are more aware of what drives you or what you value, care    about, and want from life?  If so, how did this occur?  What’s different?

What do I need to make this learning more relevant and useful?
