Task
This exercise is to be carried out on a printed version of the Site Survey Plan provided, and a blank answer sheet. Please allow yourselves time to complete the exercise and scan in before the due date.
Building Set out:
You have been provided with a contour map for a vacant block of land and an outline of the new house to be built on the land. Imagine you will be living in this house.
Carry out the following activities based on the contour map provided.
1. As an engineer, you need to choose the location of the house, the driveway and the clothesline on this block of land. First describe (in detail) what the survey information indicates about the block of land.
2. Based on the above, select a good location on the lot for the house, driveway and clothesline. Provide justification for why you have selected the locations for each of the items.
Keeping in mind:
•Trees provide shade
•The house must not be within 1.5m of the fence line/ boundary.
•The driveway should be 3m wide and at least 5m long.
•The clothesline is 2m square.
3. Now that you have located the house on the lot, what floor level do you recommend and why? How would you build the house at this level?
4. Sketch the elevation of the front verandah, ensure you show the house, natural ground surface for the full width of the lot and the access into the house. Do the same for the side of the house with a door.
5. A builder must now go and check the location of your house on the lot. Provide set out information for each corner of the house. These should be provided as lengths with bearings from the Reference Point on the drawing.
You will be assessed on the following:
▪ Understanding of the contour information provided.
▪ Selection of location for house/ driveway/ clothesline and justifications.
▪ Sketches of the 2 elevations of the block
▪ Calculation of set-out points as formal bearings
