Assignment Description

Assignment 1 is divided into two parts. In digital signal processing, convolution is one of the important concepts. The main operations in convolution are multiply and accumulate (MAC). The performance of digital signal processing algorithms deteriorates due to the increase of multiplier operations. Therefore, Part A of this assignment is related to literature review on identifying the multiplier schemes that can improve the performance of digital signal processing algorithms and relevant tools that can be useful to measure the performance. Part B of this assignment is related to implementation and analysis of digital signal processing algorithms in MATALAB.

Part A: Literature review on multiplier complexity and its mitigation techniques for digital signal processing algorithms [20 Marks]

In implementing digital signal processing algorithms, the major bottleneck is the multiplier complexity. In mitigating this multiplier complexity a lot of research is reported in the literature that can be categorized in two ways a) developing new algorithms for multipliers and b) reducing the word length used in the multiply-accumulate operation (MAC). In this regards, undertake literature survey and address the following issues:

  1. Identify from the literature any two-multiplier algorithms/schemes that may be useful in reducing the complexity and offer better performance compared to the shift-add traditional multiplier. Support your answer by providing suitable diagrams of the identified multipliers operation, its impactin hardware implementation (for example – in FPGA) and comparison in area-performance with respect to the add-shift or another algorithm. [10 Marks]
  2. Identify the importance of System-on-Chip in today’s technological advancements. Discuss which tools are useful in implementing the digital signal processing algorithms with greater efficiency and performance. Identify the industries where you can apply the knowledge of digital signal [10 Marks]
