(Fictional case infictional setting) Anthony Bell and Sonia Ng set up Coffee on the Go ,atake-away coffee business, in 2018 with asmall seating area in suburban Perth with ahandful of casual staff. They deliberately recruited students as casuals to work flexible hours needed to cover the three timeslots which were busiest for them. They took on managing the retail side of the business as well as dealing with suppliers and the landlord between them, while employing asmall bookkeeping agency run by Misha to assist with accounts management. They had agreed at the outset that they would only use wholesalers whose supply chain was able to be verified and where labour standards were being upheld. This included suppliers for coffee. This meant that often they were taking on contracts with Australian suppliers rather than overseas suppliers as this made itpossible for them to verify working conditions for employees. Italso served to create value for other local businesses. On anumber of occasions they made adecision not to set up asupply contract with particular companies because the potential supplier did not meet their high standards. They also determined to minimise waste, at times paying for waste disposal at ahigher premium. Their coffee and other prices were slightly higher than their competitor down the road, but publicity about ethical and sustainable practices formed part of their marketing and seemed to appeal to their customers. During the COVID-19 pandemic they adjusted their business to cope with the restrictions imposed by the government. One area where they had to make changes was to exclude re- usable coffee cups and require all customers to use atake-away cup. This was contrary to their ethos, but itwas arequirement under the COVID-19 rules. Regular customers understood and continued to patronise Coffee on the Go .They also had to remove the small seating area and to compensate they set up asystem for delivery of coffee and other menu items in the local area. Business slowed considerably and while they were able to call on government assistance packages for some aspects of their business, such as paying staff, as the end of these assistance packages neared, they began to look for ways to ensure that their business was able to survive. They were keen to try to maintain their standards in terms of the agreements they had made with each other at the birth of their company, but they also relied on the business to provide income to their families. Anthony and Sonia met in March 2021 with their accountant, Misha, to look at the performance of the business. Itwas during this meeting that itbecame apparent that BEANZ, one of their regular suppliers of coffee and other products, might have changed their supply chain and now be sourcing their coffee from acompany in Brazil where there had been some controversy about the use of workers on some plantations. Labour 3OF 3 inspectors had been reported as having found undocumented and underpaid coffee bean pickers including children as young as 13 working in conditions which did not meet safety regulations. The reports were from 2019. Anthony and Sonia were upset. They believed that BEANZ had previously sourced coffee from Australian suppliers who had offered reasonable quality products at aprice which allowed them to make aprofit without having to charge very high prices for coffee. They became concerned at the possibility that they have been selling coffee which might not meet the standards they set themselves for their business. Anthony and Sonia have five casual staff who work for them, including international students who are working to pay their way through university, as well as commitments associated with rent on their leased premises and contracts with other suppliers. Economic viability of their business is important not only for their own circumstances, but also because they do not want to put the employment of their staff at risk. When they start to ask questions, Misha puts itto them that they cannot afford to investigate the supply chain for BEANZ too much, as they rely on them as acore supplier and will be unable to find an alternative supplier in the same price range.
