2 CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
To begin with, it can be stated that the issue of helping Jack as a case management
worker is certainly a wicked problem because of the complexities that are associated with the
given situation. The wicked problem in essence maybe defined as a problem that is difficult
to resolve on account of lack of circumstantial evidence, and because of the complex and
challenging nature of the problem at hand (Zhao et al., 2019). Problems that are characterized
by changing and contradictory requirements may be understood as wicked problems and it is
usually a predicament where information that is needed to understand and solve the problem
completely, is missing or incomplete (Zhao et al., 2019). In the case of Jack, not much is
known about his background except for the fact that he shares an estranged relationship with
his father, and has a complex relations hip with his sister, to the extent that they do not keep in
touch regularly but only speak or interact with one another occasionally. What makes Jack’s
predicament even more difficult is the fact that his sister, who is possibly the only member of
his fami ly that he is close to is currently living on unemployment benefits, in, spite of having
a career as manager of cash and transactions at a local store, and who, is hooked to the intake
of marijuana. It has been identified that Jack is a person who does eng age in drug abuse but
because of his guarded and illusive nature, not much information can be extracted as to where
it is that he is sourcing drugs from, how much he does consume, in terms of drugs in, a given
day, and what kind of company he keeps apart f rom his sister. Jack’s case also reveals that he
was previously in association with a woman who was into drug abuse. He was under the care
of this woman for a short period of time, and it is possible that it was under her influence as
well that he became a ddicted to the consumption of drugs and exhibits characteristics that are
typical of a drug addict. Hence the problem of helping Jack and getting him to become clean
is a wicked problem as there is not much that is known about his family background and his

associates, apart from the fact that he does keep the type of company that does drugs, be it his
sister, or the woman whose care he had been under previously (based on the given scenario).
A proper understanding of theories and concepts pertain ing to drug abuse and illicit
substance use is necessary in order, to determine why it is that Jack is so illusive in nature,
why it is that he is guarded about his personal information and does not want to open , up to
the case management worker too easily . People who are into drugs tend to be on a high for
the most part of the time and are overcome by a compulsion of having to procure and to
consume drugs, at, all times (Barnes et al., 2020). The purpose behind this drug intake is to
temporarily root out a ll the problems that one is faced with in life, to eradicate the depression
and the low sense of self -esteem that one may be feeling, and to feel good and on a high,
even if this feeling is only temporary rather than permanent. It is therefore necessary to delve
into a study of essential literature concerning the history of drug abuse, why it occurs, what
are the factors or circumstances that can propel a person to take recourse to the use of drugs,
and it is only when such an understanding is acquired can the right steps be taken to ensure
that the person who is addicted to drug abuse is given the help and the assistance that is
necessary for him to be able to overcome his problem of drug addiction (Grecu et al., 2019).
It is when a proper and well research ed understanding is developed through the study of
theories and concepts as so to why it is that drug addiction courses, the characteristics of a
drug addict and the circumstances surrounding the life of a drug addict can the process of
resolving the situa tion of a drug addict and helping this person get clean, be undertaken
(Grecu et al., 2019).

As a case management worker who has been vested with the responsibility of working
with Jack and his family, I believe that it is highly imperative on my part to do the best that I
can in the given situation and help Jack and his family to get clean. Jack’ s father is not
addicted to drugs, but he does not share a good and meaningful relationship with his son and I
believe, that if I could work towards developing or growing the bond that exists between
father and son, there is much that I could do, to get Ja ck to quit drug abuse and to focus more
on the relationships in life that would matter to him, which are healthy and meaningful and
which will make him walk down the path of productivity and good living (Dave et al., 2017).
It is imperative for Jack to cul tivate a good relationship with his sister as well, but the
problem in the given situation lies in the fact that she is well into the use of marijuana, and
this is an influence that could be working quite negatively on Jack and inducing him to
engage in th e use of drugs. Hence as a case management worker in the given situation I need
to work with Jack’s sister as well and help her to find suitable forms of employment, the type
of employment that she could sustain and do over a long period of time, without w orrying
about being laid off, and which will in turn keep her from engaging in excessive use of
marijuana. A good and meaningful relationship with the father in the place of an estranged
relationship, and a relationship with a sister who is gainfully emplo yed can go a long way in
helping Jack to gradually give up the intake of drugs and work instead of a productive and
quality life (Grecu et al.., 2019).
As mentioned above already, in order, to be able to work with Jack and his family, the
firs thing that needs to be done is to get in touch with Jack’s father, find out why it is that his
relationship with the son is estranged, and work proactively with the father to come together
with Jack, sit down and have dialogues and gradually work on develo ping a bond which
father and son ought to rightfully share (Peacock et al., 2018). The next step would be to get

in touch with Jack’s sister, find out why it is that she cannot hold onto a job and is on
unemployment benefits, and help her gain some stabili ty on the job front in the hope that this
is going to get her to give up on the use of marijuana. If this is a matter that is looked , into
then work can be undertaken to develop a bond between Jack and his sister, which is positive
and healthy and which ca n gradually get Jack to stop engaging in the use of drugs
(Yamantani et al., 2017).
