Identify the continuous contributions of Indigenous people in Australian society and consider how this knowledge can be used to support the delivery of Indigenous education. The delivery of Indigenous education may be supported by the fol lowing: current education initiatives, community programs and partnerships, Indigenous foundations or institutes. (In relation to case study and other examples with reference to literature) Critically analyse and assess the ways in which past and present education practices and policies have impacted upon students/families at the chosen school. Please support these impacts with use of literature - The deficit models The tendency for Australian teachers to have low expectations of Indigenous students based on previous understandings/misconceptions. Colonial understandings shape teachers to expect Indigenous students will achieve less than mainstream student, they therefore lower their expectations of Indigenous students and what they expect they can achieve. Many events from history, such as the Stolen Generations, colonisation and the premise of Terra Nullius have not been covered in any sort of depth in primary or secondary education in the past. The teaching of Australian history in our education system has therefore been based on colonial knowledge that excludes Indigenous in put and knowledge. Again, this can perpetuate the lack of inclusion of Indigenous content in the curriculum covered by schools. Many teachers have a very limited understanding of Indigenous perspectives/education. Some teachers can therefore feel that it is easier to leave it to someone such as an Indigenous person, else to teach. This issue can be addressed by schools ensuring they provide appropriate professional development for their teachers in this area. - Teaching practice - Absence of teaching content - Teacher knowledge - Approaches to teaching Critically analyse Indigenous education and perspectives with relation to its implementation in current educational contexts.
