‘Grow Your Own Teacher’ Bill Passed by Colorado Education Committee
House Education Committee of Colorado recently passed the House Bill 1349 by a comfortable margin. The bill better known as ‘Grow Your Own Teacher’ Bill envisages to strengthen the ties between students and teachers. Once made into an Act, it will allow the schools to enter into proper agreements with teacher preparation programs at colleges in Colorado.
University of Colorado Denver’s associate professor Margarita Bianco strongly advocated this bill. According to her, there were not enough minority teachers in the state. The teachers who were working in various schools were not eager to work in high need schools. She added that there were qualified teachers working in the institutions but most of them did not pursue career in teaching for more than two years.
Dr Bianco whimpered that this perpetual process hindered the growth of the education system in Colorado as the students did not enjoy a consistency of educators in their schools. She believes that this bill along with their concerned efforts could bring a change in the situation.
Democratic state representative Rhoda Fields presented this proposal to the House Education Committee. She opined that this noble initiative would allow the students understand the values and importance of teaching profession. It would help to grow a mentality among the high school students who in future would like to get themselves associated with this profession. She further told the House that retaining teachers was one of the growing problems in the schools. She hoped that this initiative would encourage the students who could become teachers in their own neighborhood in the future.
The proponents of this bill further said that it would strengthen the social bond as the colored people would get a chance to serve their own communities who understand them better.
But the opposition countered it by saying that it wouldn’t make a significant difference. They termed the proposal as unnecessary as the schools had the options to allow the students to take college courses while already in their high school. Republican representative Kevin Priola stated that it would have no fiscal impact. Though he applauded the effort, he opined that it would fail to make the expected changes.
House Bill 1349 or the Grow Your Own Teacher Bill was passed by the House Education Committee by a vote of 7 to 4. In the next step, it needs to get passed through the full House of Representatives to become an Act.
