205 3A Community health Nursing
Case Study Beginning in early 2020 we found ourselves amid a global pandemic, considered a once in a century event. During this and other outbreaks of communicable disease nurses in community health may be called upon to participate in actions such as contact tracing and educating individuals or groups on the need for quarantine, isolation, social distancing, and the need for restrictions on freedom of individuals. Nurses may collaborate with law enforcement or others when more extreme measures are required to enforce isolation and other restrictions. In order to be prepared for these activities it is helpful to consider the principles for justification of public health interventions. Many of the actions taken by the Canadian Government and provincial/territorial governments of Canada to respond to COVID 19 and impose extreme restrictions to reduce spread of disease relate to the principles for justification of public health interventions. Review the four ethical principles outlined by Upshur (2002) as found on pages 166 of your textbook (Stanhope et al., 2017) and in the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA, February, 2006) article. Discuss how you can see the application of these principles in the COVID 19 public health actions. You may find it helpful to review the measures the Government of Canada and the Provincial/Territorial Government where you live imposed to reduce rate of infections in preparation for the discussion. Do you see any time when nurses may experience ethical dilemmas as they try to uphold other ethical principles described in Chapter 6 of Stanhope et al. (2017) at the same time as upholding the principles for justification of public health interventions? If so, explain your answer
